My father, Richard, has been in a nursing home on Cape Cod for nearly a year with late stage Frontotemporal Dementia. He gave us a scare in the late fall and didn't know if he'd live to see his 73rd birthday on January 16.
He rallied like a champ and though the disease has taken away his ability to speak, he was able to enjoy our company and follow along as we would talk to him and tell him stories. When we weren't able to visit in person, we could connect over FaceTime.
A couple of months ago, the nursing home shut down all visitors. My stepmom would visit him all the time, so this was particularly hard on her too. We live in VA & WV so whenever we could get up there to see him, I was always well-aware that it could be the last time. I never imagined that he would die by anything other than FTD complications.
My stepmom, Nikki, informed us this morning that he tested positive for the Chinese coronavirus but was asymptomatic. They had closed off the facility into "pods" with the same staff designated for each resident to limit the spread of any infection. Of course, the staff don't live there, and I suspect most don't live alone. However, they all wear masks in the facility, and I know are as cautious as they can be. Nevertheless, one of the staff in my father's pod got infected and infected my dad and 2 other residents.
Since this morning, the virus has progressed, and he is now having difficulty getting oxygen and on morphine. My stepmom is going in the morning (they couldn't take her today) and has the option of seeing him either wearing a hazmat suit or behind a window in another room. If he's on morphine, who only knows how much he'll be able to feel her presence from behind those barriers.
So, I'm just asking for prayers that whatever in God's plan helps him as much as possible in either outcome. The nursing home administrator, as well as our family, are not optimistic that he has the reserves to fight this in his extemely weakened state with all his other medical issues (not including a prior history of asthma). Thanks for reading and God bless.
Consider it done.
Damn. Hate to hear that. Hang in there... prayers for him.
