NFL team unveils plans for bringing back fans, including timed entrances, attendance limits

**SNIP**

Miami Dolphins President/CEO Tom Garfinkel laid out his team’s plans Monday on “Good Morning America,” describing how going to an NFL game will become much like ordering takeout from a restaurant or grocery shopping during the pandemic. All fans would wear masks, and colored spots on the ground outside the stadium would indicate proper social distancing as spectators wait to enter. Food would be ordered from the seat and then picked up at the designated concession stand, eliminating the need for lines.

Entering and exiting the stadium also would change to give everyone more space.

“We would have times to come in for security at different gates so people would be separated out, in terms of when they enter the stadium,” Garfinkel said. “We would exit the stadium much like a church environment, where each row exits so people aren’t filing out all at the same time in a herd.”

To accomplish this, capacity might have to be limited, ABC reported. Instead of the 65,000 fans Hard Rock Stadium can hold, attendance could be held to only 15,000 for the 2020 season so everyone can keep a proper distance. Left unsaid was how the Dolphins would handle this limitation considering that the team’s season ticket base most likely exceeds 15,000. (In 2012, for example, it was 30,000.)

I miss The Orange Bowl. There was a mystique about it, that when the Dolphins used to play there, they were tough to beat. And RIP, Coach Shula.

>>Doesn’t the NFL make more money from TV contracts than actual ticket sales?<<

It appears so. This seemed to be the best take I could find: https://www.investopedia.com/articles/personal-finance/062515/how-nfl-makes-money.asp

When you wade through the morass of numbers it is pretty clear that TV is most of the NFL revenue — tickets are only about 8% of the revenue stream.

Will people watch teams play to empty stadiums? Well, if you ask Oakland, Detroit, DC and Tampa I guess the answer is “yes.”

Why not have the fancy decontamination jets we saw demoed in January and February?

the Orange Bowl was great...i was there for several Miami Hurricane FB games and while it was old and dank, the history of the place just made it special...

in the later years they really let it go to hell- the place would be half full for UM football games and the upstairs bleachers were constantly full of bird sh!t which they never cleaned up...

I will say this- after LA, Miami is the worst sports town and has the most disloyal, uninterested fans of any city in America...

tons- i am in the business and can tell you NFL owners don’t care if they play in half full stadiums this season as the TV ratings would be off the charts...there are a lot of teams who lose money on home games as the stadium costs more to run than the revenue brought in...its all about the TV $$$

If you thought the stadiums had fewer people due to the NFL supporting killing police officers wait till you see the few who show up wearing a mask for 4+ hours.

>Will people watch teams play to empty stadiums?

China faked footage in their Olympics coverage.

And Hollywood knows how the created Gladiator stadiums full of people.

And CBS/Viacom/Sony dubbed cheers over the boos Hillary Clinton received at the Concert for NYC from members of the NYFD and NYPD.

The ads you see in a sports venue may even be digitally substituted for home viewers.

If you want it to be loud with screaming fans, it can be regardless of the reality.

Judging by attendance at Dolphins games the last few years, social distancing shouldn’t be a problem.

My first thought, too. Going to be a lot of people buying new TVs in the fall is my guess.

Those were the days.

Stadiums were better before all of the suites.

Yep in the 80s, the Dolphins and the Hurricanes almost never lost in the Orange Bowl.

Although, I still have those painful memories of that playoff game against San Diego, when Kellen Winslow single-handedly willed the Chargers to win that one. But what a great game it was, just the same, still maybe the greatest game I’ve ever seen.

No way in hell I would go to a football game if I had to wear a damn mask. Just leave every other row empty.

Last football game I went to was South Carolina at Tennessee(last year).

Don’t know what they are going to do about golf fans. Been to the Masters 3 times. And, of course, everyone crowds around the greens.

I will say this about Tennessee Vols fans, they will show up, come hell or high water.

They definitately have the most loyal fans in College Football. They could be 0-11, and they’ll still get 100K + out to Neyland.

“...attendance could be held to only 15,000 for the 2020 season...”

Oh excellent. A single file line of 15,000 people spaced 6 feet apart would only be 17 miles long! And if there were 6 entrances each line would be a mere 2.8 miles long. That will work!

Yep, Don Shula’s passing today, made me reflect on just how much better football was back then, compared to what it is now.
