Pediatricians across the country are sounding the alarm: The stress of unemployment and financial insecurity has strained relationships between children and those who care for them. The closures of schools and day cares have forced children closer to adults who may not be safe.
In a world without school, doctors and advocates say, no one is there to watch, to speak up, until its too late.
The American system of catching child abuse relies on kids venturing outside their homes.
Year after year, most referrals to child protective services come from professionals police officers, lawyers, doctors, anyone who comes into contact with a child as part of their job. But no group reports more than educators, who were responsible for 21 percent of the 4.3 million referrals made in 2018, according to federal data.
After 17 years in the classroom, one fifth-grade teacher in Northern Virginia said shes learned exactly what to watch for: Students falling asleep inexplicably or stealing peers food at snack time. Prolonged absences from school paired with reasons that make little sense out for a week, she was told once, because the student slid and fell. Promised doctors notes that never arrived.
Shes trying to stay in touch with her fifth-graders, holding video class and office hours, phoning and emailing. But the teacher, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to protect her students privacy, knows its not enough.
She worries about students she says are showing troubling signs withdrawing, refusing to show themselves on video lessons. She worries especially about a student she has twice reported as a possible victim of abuse this year. Recently, she wrote that student a letter.

No it’s true.
My 87 year old mother keeps hitting me with her cane.
Probably needed stitches last time.
Predictable. I would personally love to kick each and every single one of these men’s buttocks. The Mrs would do it to the women.
I had to look that up
I had an old uncle in his 90s die last year.
Too many lumps in his cereal.
Couldn’t chew anymore and just fell right over.
They wrote “Captain Crunch” as cause of death :)
As a massive group of the population finally learns, it wasnt the teachers after all...

Dr. Fakey and Dr. Bersurk have no interest in children.
Really glad to see articles like this! I despise the Post as much as anyone, but they will reach the people who need to hear this. Sadly, I don’t think saying either “lockdowns are unconstitutional” or “ lockdowns are not needed” will have any effect on our compliant and fearful populace. The only thing that will move people is to realize the alternative is worse. Trump should have been doing this all along.
Sums it up correctly. A large percentage of those dying had an average actuarial life expectancy left of less than a year, given their co-morbidities and age. Many were basically in the process of dying very soon.
Dr bird has two well to do daughters and a nice husband. Actually.
A system that believes that spanking is child abuse. Enough said.
Not sure if SEEING more cases means there ARE more cases.
Who would have predicted that? LOL!
end the lockdown. think of the children.
