New York's second round of antibody testing found 14.9 percent of samples to be positive, a full percentage point higher than the first round, Cuomo said Monday.
That indicates even more than the 2.7 million New Yorkers identified in the first testing round may have been infected at some point. Many likely never even knew they had the virus -- and were spreading it.
New York state has reported nearly 300,000 confirmed cases to date. That number seems staggering -- until you realize the actual total could be 10 times higher at minimum.
Again, there were glaring variations by region, with samples in New York City, the nation's epicenter, showing much higher positivity rates (24.7 percent) than anywhere else in the state. The city's positive rate jumped up by about three percentage points since last week's study. Westchester/Rockland counties had a higher percentage of positives (15.1 percent) than Long Island (14.4 percent) in this round of testing, while the rest of the state averaged 3.2 percent.
Given the limitations of diagnostic testing, antibody testing paints a fuller picture of the scope of the pandemic in a given place. Cuomo has said it helps inform his opening strategy for New York: "Know what you are doing before you do it."
Antibodies don't guarantee immunity from reinfection, but the nation's top experts, including Dr. Anthony Fauci, say it's reasonable to assume someone who has had the virus won't get it again. At least not in the immediate future.
To date, New York City has seen more than 160,000 COVID-19 cases of the state's 291,000-plus total. It has also seen the most death -- 12,287 of the state's toll, which eclipsed 17,000 Monday as Cuomo added another 337 names (the lowest single-day toll in a month).

Sorry, won’t work unless they can pad the death numbers more. But I think NY is running out of random dead people they can blame on the virus. They still want to make it sound bad enough to get a federal bailout though.

They must have had no option but to cover this. 60% exposure has traditionally been considered herd immunity. However in the new, very scary, oh so dangerous covid world, I expect that goalpost to be moved.
This is not surprising given what we have learned in the past few weeks. NYC and other crowded areas reliant on public transportation will likely have the largest numbers of infections for any human to human transmission. Simple logic.
What is surprising is that the real statistics of this virus related to its mortality rate are not front and center in the national conversation about “where do we go from here.”
The models we acted upon at the outset of this were wrong. Severely wrong. They were correct in assuming an unacceptable mortality rate among the elderly and vulnerable, but they took the numbers for that group and transposed them on all of society when the truth is that young adults and those in good health had very little risk of dying from this disease. Yet, we shut everything down in a one-size fits all model based largely on NYC.
Go figure. I pray President Trump is beginning to get a grasp on what I wrote above and what many are starting to say and write. Open the country back up immediately! We will have outbreaks and unfortunately more deaths, but NOTHING even approaching what they claimed we would.

There are plenty more old and vulnerable who don’t come out at all.
The sample is not fully representative of the population.
The masks and gloves are a recent development. The CDC only recommended cloth masks for the general public three weeks ago.

It could be representative. My 89 father and 87 year old mother venture out on shopping trips about once every ten days. (No, I can't stop them) If others are like them, then the population they tested includes high risk folks.

The CFR is based on Diagnosed Cases
The CRF For Covid 19 is 8% in New York state
22,600 dead, 297224 confirmed cases
The CFR for Flu is usually around 0.2%
2018-19 flu
35,500,000 infected, 34,000 dead
0.095%
The IFR is infections/ total infected
So Covid is about 40 times as deadly based on the CFR.
The new numbers involve the IFR
21% of New Yorkers, 4 million may have been infected.
20861 x 100%/ 4 million =IFR of 0.5%
The IFR of the flu is about 0.02%
Based on that Covid 19 is 25 times as deadly as the flu.

I wear gloves when out, use hand sanitizer on the gloves, don’t touch my face or mask until I sanitize, and know how to remove and dispose of the gloves correctly.

This should be taken with a grain of salt. The testing may be generating false positives, and antibodies may indicate not a full infection but a minimal exposure that did not cause an infection.
