Subway robberies are skyrocketing despite a plunge in ridership during the coronavirus crisis - forcing the MTA to call in outside contractors for backup, according to sources.
March saw 51 robberies across the 472-station subway system - compared to 33 the previous year, according to NYPD stats.
There was a mere 3.4 percent drop in overall major felonies on the system, even as ridership dropped by nearly 90 percent from pre-crisis levels.
The surge came while the MTA and NYPD struggle with virus-induced personnel shortages, with 5,055 NYPD personnel still out of work due to the virus as of Sunday evening.
To cope, the MTA has deployed 70 privately contracted security guards to city transit, and plans to add more as needed, a senior MTA source told The Post, confirming a report from The City.
The security contractors are meant to serve as extra eyes and ears, not additional law enforcement, the source said.

De Blasio has a plan for that -

There may be no answer if #AskMyMayor is at the gym.
She should have shot him.
Thank God for fly over country!!
Thank God for NYC brother.
I love it here.
You people read but you’re not here and I can see why you get scared or get a picture that isn’t real.
Or miss out on the great parts.
Like waiting for a subway at 2am and having some dude with a broken down electric guitar and a small amp and suddenly he’s playing Hendix like he was Hendrix himself, with his teeth, behind him...like nothing I ever saw or will again.
I just drank my beer in a bag and listened for 20 minutes.
One of many, many stories like that.
I had a million great times in Manhattan. I liked coming home to the quiet of staten island at night.
But I would have hanged myself from boredom in flyover country by the time I was 17 from boredom.
Buona notte

Robbers robbing each other?
Then more of you in the city the less of you in the country.
All the better for us in fly over country.
Please don’t move here and ruin it with your city ideas.
They are up because of the drop in ridership, not despite the drop.
would never dream of it. Now turn around and kiss your cousin, er wife good morning :)
No kidding?
Some people know at a glance that something won't work--and what will be the bad consequences of trying it.
Some people have to try it--and still can't understand that it won't work--or why. They are called morons.
The NY Post is lying. They omit the fact that homeless are now scores and scores of homeless living in the subway cars and the subway stations as ridership by commuters has plunged.
Laura Ingraham covered this just yesterday. She said the bulk of people on subways are the homeless and the health care professionals commuting to their hospitals for work. It is a homeless bum crime crisis. Nothing more or less than that. Arrest them all and move them into a compound somewhere. Feed them and contain them in a corral during the lock down.
Good for you. I left NY 20 years ago for rural NE PA and never looked back. Since then it has been taken over by New Yonkers especially now they come here and contaminate the whole area. They should stay home!
Hand over the sammich and no one gets hurt.
Love, Jussie
