It’s never good for a sitting president heading into reelection to be compared to Jimmy Carter. In 1980, with the country in an economic and diplomatic crisis, the beleaguered former president took on Ronald Reagan, then considered a weak challenger, and won only six states.
Now as 2020 nears, President Trump is finding himself constantly behind Democrats in reelection polls and the latest has compared the Republican to Carter. “Perhaps the closest analogy to Trump in terms of approval ratings is Jimmy Carter, whose average approval rating for his term was 45 percent,” said a survey from the Wason Center for Public Policy at Virginia’s Christopher Newport University.
“Carter, of course, lost his reelection bid. Trump’s average approval rating for his first 27 months in office has ranged between the high 30s and the mid-40s. President Trump will be the least popular president to run for reelection in the history of polling,” said the poll analysis that put Trump at 37% and a generic Democrat at 48%.

Trump’s numbers aren’t great, but they are within 2 points of Obama’s at this point in his tenure. And they are well above Bush I’s, Carter’s and Ford’s at this point. They are certainly above LBJ’s abysmal number in March 1968 when he bowed out of the 1968 race in the face of strong primary challenges.

And if there are , elections should be suspended and Trump made plenary leader. For it will be finally proven that the American people are too witless to be left to choose their own leadership anymore.

Pollsters get paid to be accurate. No Democrat is gonna thank a pollster who underestimated his opponent’s numbers, leading to the Democrat’s overconfidence, mis-allocation of resources and ultimate defeat. He wants to know the numbers as they are, not the way he’d like them to be. Pollsters are the political equivalent of a military organization’s reconnaissance units - they identify, on a geographic basis, the enemy’s key assets and weaknesses so commanding officers can decide how to deploy their units most effectively. Hillary lost because her highly-paid Midwestern pollsters were wrong and she wasted time narrowing Trump’s margins in “close but no cigar” red states like Georgia.
