Cruise lines started 2020 expecting a banner year. Demand for cruises in the Caribbean, Alaska, and around the world was huge; fares were high. COVID-19 has, of course, changed all that, and cruise companies have been battered by an unprecedented drop in demand, sparked in part by CDC and U.S. Department of State warnings against travel by ship. Now, the whole industry is on pause. Summer seasons in Alaska and Europe are questionable, according to industry analysts and cruise insiders. Entire countries including Australia, Canada, Italy, and Mexico are closed to cruise ship traffic.
All of which raises the question: When will we cruise again?
Among the dozens of issues are crew readiness, securing provisions, implementing passenger health screenings, and determining which ports will be open and which might turn away a visiting ship. Then theres the challenge of simply getting potential passengers to the ship in the first place.
Before they stopped sailing, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises, and Norwegian Cruise Line were among the brands saying they would institute a new rule barring any guests with chronic illness from their ships. Those lines would also require any passengers age 70 and up to have a physicians letter saying theyre fit to cruise.

“The problem is that the ships that enter and leave Florida ports are foreign flagged ships.”
Are Mexican tractor trailers driving on US roads governed by DHS and the CDC?
Whether foreign-flagged or not is irrelevant. They begin and end their cruises in state ports, under state jurisdiction.
It’s going to take some time, a lot of time. I’m not overly worried about covid-19, but I’m not flying in a plane, nor am I taking a cruise. No way, no how.
My free cruise that got cancelled has been extended until December 2021 for me to pick something but has to be done by May 1. The other free cruise I got has to be booked by July 31 but taken by May 2021.
Because it was free the 125% they are giving people can only be used for admin fees
its a confusing mess
NCL said they are cruising in May...I laughed out loud.
One night I wandered up to the bow of the ship to admire the night. I glanced down toward the water and saw what seemed like an endless procession of huge black trash bags being dumped into the water. I watched for about 10 minutes and it didn't stop. Considering the frequency of those cruises and the number of ships involved, the amount of trash dumped into the ocean is mind-boggling. I'm not a crazy-eyed "environmentalist," but if cruising results in that behavior I'm against it.
The Coast Guard hasn’t banned cruising.
You really can’t make them safe. The very nature of communicable disease and a densely populated isolated “building” means cruise ships are basically schools. 1 sick person enters, dozens leave. But it’s a risk folks accept because even then the odds are against 1 individual person (ie you) getting sick. Give it a year, it’ll be back to normal.
Not me.
Right, most of these youre not getting me on that Petri Dish people have never been on a cruise for whatever reason and never would anyway.
“Before the Coronavirus these Cruise Ships were plagued by various illnesses and deaths.”
Have you ever been on a cruise or is what your postulating simply the accumulation of MSM reporting?
Does the MSM run a national story every time someone gets sick or dies in a Walmart?
First step ...
Only sell balcony cabins. Refuse to sell inside rooms or cabins without fresh air.
That’ll get you back at reduced capacity and lower the density of people on the ships.
KILL THE JONES ACT.
Right , reasonable risk like any entertainment venue will be good enough.
Yes but thy pass through National waters as well. International commerce and transportation is the responsibility of the federal government. So the state has limited control.
“The Coast Guard hasnt banned cruising.”
Coast Guard reorts to the President.
And in part by a sudden upsurge in common sense.
The industry as it existed is dead and won't be returning.
That is news to me, after 30-35 cruises (lost count). I always come back stronger by using the beautiful Gym on ship, and walking 10-12 thousand steps every day. On that ship Oasis of the Seas it was half a mile walk from our cabin to assigned dining room and back.
On the very 1st cruise I was well prepared for anti-nausea with patches and pill, but never needed it, so never bothered again. Never had stomach virus on any of the cruises. My aim is to make 50 cruises. So I must hurry since already age 80 and legs might give out.
It’d be a lot easier if you just said “triple the price of all cruises”.
Thanks a lot George, really. Thanks for suggesting us cruisers pay more and cruise less. Swell guy, you know, lookin out for the Little Guy as you are.
You are a uniformed idiot.
