New York's 'coronavirus refugees' continue to flee for the Hamptons, Cape Cod and Martha's Vineyard - stripping grocery stores bare - but locals demand travel bans or mandatory quarantine and say they won't be used as a 'personal isolation unit'

Tensions are rising in small towns where rich New York City residents have fled to escape the coronavirus hotspot as locals complaining of ransacked supermarkets and crowded hospitals attempt to stop the influx of outsiders. As NYC's death toll hit 1,096 on Tuesday night, so-called 'coronavirus refugees' continued to arrive at vacation destinations across the Northeast, including the Hamptons, Hudson Valley and Martha's Vineyard. The 'coronavirus refugees' have been leaving the Big Apple in droves, snapping up rental properties in quiet communities where the threat of contracting the deadly bug is significantly lower.

We have a limited pot of money - and too much of it is being spent on saving the ingrates in New York City. It’s time to change the focus to keeping our food chain working, safeguarding the mail, and UVing our cash money supply.

I’m sick of every dime going to save jerks in New York City.

If people own homes there, they have every right to go live there.

Interesting that the pattern touted by survivalists of an urban exodus from crisis would happen.

And so lets hope the friendly city travelers do not turn to looting.

That’s when the shooting will start.

“ If people own homes there, they have every right to go live there.”

I guess that was my initial thought, too. The local communities are surely benefiting from the property taxes these people are paying on their second (or third) home, correct?

The city-dwellers on social media are already talking about migrating to the exurbs, and looting the locals...

If these New Yorkers own homes and pay property taxes in these communities then they do have a right to use those homes. I think these communities in turn have every right to enforce strict limits on grocery purchases. It’s disgraceful that such a thing should have to be brought up, but that is the nature of many New Yorkers.

I also think requiring a 14-day quarantine for anyone coming in from out of town is warranted. While I don’t believe any of China’s reported numbers I’m sure if the residents of Wuhan had been allowed to travel throughout that country freely as that city’s infection rate peaked things would have been a lot worse.

Agreed. If they own homes they have every right to flee to them. But, the groceries should have stopped the hoarding runs by limiting items immediately.

If you own the property, you shouldn't be denied access to said property.

As for a 14-day quarantine for non-locals...has anyone in MA looked at their hotspots? MA isn't exactly clean.

The tribalism we're seeing in this country is getting stupid.

More bodies to clean out when the survivors move to the cape.

Just put some plastic on your bed so we can just roll you up.

Down in Florida the state has ordered a 14-day quarantine for people coming in from the NE and New Orleans.

At my brother’s condo the condo board said that owners from those states can come down and must obey the state quarantine. (State penalty - $5,000 and 90 days in jail). The condo has forbidden guests or vacation rentals from those places.

The beach is closed. $500 fine and a few days in jail. Brother said instead of the local beach guys maintaining order among the 60 year olds it is armed cops now enforcing the rules.
