What Good Are Constitutional Rights if They Are Violated When Americans Get Sick?
The Washington Times ^ | March 25, 2020 | Andrew Napolitano

“Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.”

— Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790)

One of my Fox colleagues recently sent me an email attachment of a painting of the framers signing the Constitution of the United States. Except in this version, George Washington — who presided at the Constitutional Convention — looks at James Madison — who was the scrivener at the Convention — and says, “None of this counts if people get sick, right?”

In these days of state governors issuing daily decrees purporting to criminalize the exercise of our personal freedoms, the words put into Washington’s mouth are only mildly amusing. Had Washington actually asked such a question, Madison, of all people, would likely have responded: “No. This document protects our natural rights at all times and under all circumstances.”

It is easy, 233 years later, to offer that hypothetical response, particularly since the Supreme Court has done so already when, as readers of this column will recall, Abraham Lincoln suspended the constitutionally guaranteed writ of habeas corpus — the right to be brought before a judge upon arrest — only to be rebuked by the Supreme Court.

Seems many who claim to be conservative are far from it.

I think it’s just anxiety. Panic behavior. My neighbors through maybe I was “panicking” a couple days ago when I told them we need to start thinking about security on our block.

This is wartime Napster. When it is wartime, you don’t have the privileged of getting everything you want but doing with what you have.

So, America, What will we do when our shops and factories re-open and the employer requires us to be vaccinated against COVID or not have a job?

Cuz, you know it’s coming.

I’m with you. I’ve never seen so many FReepers give up on the Constitution and freedom before. It’s why FR is dying.

This is a medical crisis. You have a better idea how to respond? Don’t hold back. LOVE to hear it.

Governorships have become Disneyland for the elected. The elected can, and have done, what they want, with whom they want, profiting as they would, while their next major project is their re-election, starting one hour after being sworn in! And then comes “trouble’, and that elected governor of the people, becomes an overbearing, over-reaching, tyrant grasping to retain power, when it is demonstrated they ain’t got it!

Dear World,
We never cared to balance responsibilities with our rights. We preferred quoting out of context, not paying taxes and doing legal drugs all while not having our children vaccinated.

And they control state medical inventories. While their pet projects or “surpluses” are funded, a pandemic comes along and we’re short. Per their decisions. Both parties.

This is now precedent for permission to handle the next medical outbreak (see SARS, MERS, Bird Flu, Swine Flu, Ebola) that threatens to spread quickly with no vaccine available. Or of anything that’s perceived as a looming threat to the Greater Good; for example, Climate Change.

The fact that most of here trust Trump is perhaps the best argument against our willingness to give up our freedoms. If Clinton were president, how many of us would shrug our shoulders and scold that it’s completely necessary and not to worry about the ensuing financial carnage? At the very least, we’d be more attuned to the shifting ground beneath our feet.

Unless there is far more to this than we’re being told and will be informed of later (for example, that it is indeed a bio-weapon) this is a watershed event with ripple effects for generations to come.

1. We do give up freedom upon entering society, just as Washington said. The a Bill of Rights is intended to outline the freedoms we do NOT give up. These are our essential liberties, which leads to ...

2. We are giving up essential liberties. People are being denied their 1A rights to free expression of religion and assembly. The safety thus purchased is indeed temporary, unless there’s someone dying who would otherwise have been immortal. Franklin’s quote is applicable

I think we will learn from this. We can now do a million tests in a short time. Once we sterilize the country we can deploy testing so we can let people in and keep the virus out. In this new world we will be much more resistant to future epidemics. Like I said. The Spanish FLu so impressed the Medical COmmunity we still have epidemic math questions on every exam every doctor takes. A century later.

I think we will learn from this.

We learned there are a lot of the "medical" community who are quacks and loons. The Spanish Flu was a deadly disease and not like the sniffles that COVID is to 99.99% who have this hugely harmless common cold virus. That is if they have any symptoms at all.

So please shut up you old quack. Do us a favor and use "we". Do yo have turd in your pocket or something?
