Even masks that are only 50% effective, if worn by all, would reduce the airborne R0 roughly from 2 to just .5.
If course it wouldn’t help for other means of transfer.
Well, wait a minute, it would reduce transfer from the infected in other ways too.
Probably drive it close to 1.

Info varies.

Seems a few days before they show symptoms they have seveloped a heavy viral load and are at least moderately infectious.

At the time the patient just feels ‘a little off’.

In a family situation even lightly infectious people spread because of the intimacy.

Two military personnel test positive for coronavirus again after full recovery

By Yonhap
Published : Mar 29, 2020 - 11:19 Updated : Mar 29, 2020 - 11:19
Two military personnel, who had been reported to have fully recovered from the new coronavirus, have tested positive again, the defense ministry said Sunday.

An Army officer based in Yongin, some 50 kilometers south of Seoul, and an Air Force contractor in the southeastern city of Daegu have tested positive while in a preventive quarantine after leaving the hospital, according to the ministry.

Both were reported to have fully recovered from the virus on March 20. They have been in quarantine again at a hospital since Friday, it said.

The military has so far reported 39 infections in barracks, including 30 people who have fully recovered from the virus.

TP (which everyone seems to have a surplus of) layers should make a passable mask. Heck only one sheet of that commercial TP...

Seriously, masks don’t have to be very good if everyone’s wearing them.

IDK.
Seen reports that the SK test is very poor. So it might be an error.
Still, it’s a troubling indication.

so according to that doc, if you go into a sterile room, and don’t spend more than 15 minutes in that room with an infected person, and wash your hands, you are good to go.

I’ll start carrying around a sterile room, then. Right next to my hand sanitizer and mask.

Mistake, must have had admissions in mind.

Quarantine working = about 5 - 7 days [two weeks, give or take].

This is a metric were a new admissions / total admissions score would provide a faster indicator (5 - 7 days).

awww. That was really nice of them to extend the warm fuzzies. It’s the little things that mean so much.

(and I’m sure you’re also happy they did listen to you because that means, less trips for you over there just to deliver groceries and more happy, here’s a extra treat we were thinking of you, trips. yay!)

This article is only talking about N95 masks. These are needed by healthcare workers, but not by the US population in general.

The idea behind everyone wear a mask everyday is to stop the spread. For that, only surgical masks are needed.

These are the masks that stop the wearer from spreading diseases (like asymptomatic spreaders of this virus can).

If everyone is wearing one of these masks, the spread will be slowed significantly. And that’s when we can begin to come out of this shelter in place.

Anyone who is not wearing a mask will be shunned and avoided. This will be the new meme.

This is now a national epidemic with multiple epicenters. New Orleans, Dallas, Miami, Chicago, Detroit, Boston, Philadelphia, Los Angeles are among cities doubling cases every 3 to 4 days. This reality may severely stretch our ability to federally assist local healthcare systems.

“They should treat those with milder systems, and positive tests, and get them through the system before the surge.”

What treatment? Except for experimental drugs (malaria meds, etc), there is no medicine for the virus. For mild cases, all positive cases are sent home. There is nothing to do.

For those with breathing issues, they get admitted and put on a ventilator. Cases with breathing issues aren’t classified as “mild”.

Agreed—I can’t seem to article focusing on the surgical masks—so I don’t know how long it will take for those to be readily available for all Americans.

The homemade mask option will be the best short-term one.

Dozens of nursing home residents in Carroll County have tested positive for coronavirus, state and county health officials announced Saturday.

Officials said there’s an outbreak of coronavirus at Pleasant View Nursing Home in Mount Airy, where 66 residents have tested positive, with 11 hospitalized at Carroll County Hospital and Frederick Memorial Hospital.

“It took nearly three weeks for the national capital region to go from 0 to 1,000 cases of COVID-19. It took three days for the region to go from 1,000 to 2,000 cases in Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia. This is a rapidly evolving and escalating emergency which is now surrounding the nation’s capital.

Feds should consider telling people to wear masks in areas of epidemic spread. But supply chain for hospitals is crushed. All resources must go to providers. In the interim - for consumers who don’t already have masks - CDC can fashion proposal on how people make cotton masks.

Yes, mostly DeBlasio, but I’m sure there are others. Of course they will try to blame Trump. Just saw the Mayor Of New Orleans, LaToya Cantrell, blaming Trump for failing to cancel Mardi Gras!

you’re right. Trump has sent a very clear msg over the last two weeks he expects the governors to govern. Unfortunately, some governors aren’t able to govern, they’re only geared to politic and for them a size 14 boot up their butt is a rude awakening. Take Cuomo - neurotic over ventilators on his daily rants, then admitting by mistake he has 4K in a warehouse at the ready. What else he has in a warehouse is a different thread, but he’s clearly politicking more than he’s leading. If he was leading, we wouldn’t have doctors and nurses on TV and media complaining about PPE and ICU equipment shortages. Rather than hour-long powerpoint presentations he’d be out in the field, no time for daily briefings used more to challenge the President than drive any inspired response in his state.
