This article is only talking about N95 masks. These are needed by healthcare workers, but not by the US population in general.
The idea behind everyone wear a mask everyday is to stop the spread. For that, only surgical masks are needed.
These are the masks that stop the wearer from spreading diseases (like asymptomatic spreaders of this virus can).
If everyone is wearing one of these masks, the spread will be slowed significantly. And that’s when we can begin to come out of this shelter in place.
Anyone who is not wearing a mask will be shunned and avoided. This will be the new meme.
Agreed—I can’t seem to article focusing on the surgical masks—so I don’t know how long it will take for those to be readily available for all Americans.
The homemade mask option will be the best short-term one.
