Less than a week after being ordered to close all dining room service and focus solely on takeout, eateries are pulling the plug on that business, too. Takeout and delivery orders in the face of crescendoing coronavirus contamination fears just arent pulling in enough dough to keep the lights on. Plus, its not safe, restaurateurs say.
Cristina Castaneda on Saturday shuttered her last two remaining restaurants, including Mexican restaurant El Mitote and Mediterranean eatery Ella Social, after deciding she couldnt continue to sell food without endangering her and her staffs health.
I worked there all day and just couldnt find a safe way to continue operating, she said late Saturday night. We are going home.

>>I think one factor is that people are ordering food only. Restaurants make much of their profit from soda and alcohol.
They simply cannot break even on food only.
Texas governor has permitted alcohol deliveries (if made with food) in this time
Most anything that isnt quick service or primarily take out/delivery based before this started will eventually end up closed, if this keeps up for long. Owners are trying to make it work, but most will lose money staying open for take out only and shut down.
In Nashville, the mayor just closed all non essential businesses for at least two weeks, effective at midnight last night. I own a restaurant downtown and could keep going with delivery and take out, at least for now, but Im also concerned that I might bring something back to my wife who is in a high risk group if she did get it. So, starting today, were shutting down for at least two weeks, as long as the mayors Safer at Home policy is in effect.
Ill use the time for maintenance and remodeling.
When we do reopen I invite any Freepers in the Nashville area to come by Varallos Restaurant, the oldest restaurant in the state of Tennessee.
bump for when I’m in town.
Wow. I always thought NYC lived on takeout.
You mean you aren’t going to go bankrupt in a couple of weeks? You keep money in the bank for tough times? What’s wrong with you? Don’t you know it’s the American way to have credit maxed, no money in the bank and 2-3 days worth of food at home?

He’s not, really. My very wealthy brother is stuck in his lovely high-rise dining on Campbell’s soup. The restaurants are closing down and the stores are either overwhelmed or empty of shelves. I want him to get on a plane (I forget if the airports are closed, probably) and come to my house.
DeBlasio’s sanctuary city need to be put on lock down.
Suit yourselves, but fortune favors the bold.
Yep, they need to keep the sick in their sanctuary city they created.

Select the Vegans first. They're the closest to grass-fed meat.
“I always thought NYC lived on takeout.”
It varies from one neighborhood to another, but I’ve never seen a large supermarket in Manhattan. Land is very expensive, and parking would be non-existent. A lot of NYers shop here in NJ at Wal-Marts and such on this side of the Hudson River.
When I went to pick up my order, I was the only customer there. The lights were dimmed and the woman who I paid looked sad. So I threw a $10 tip on the check even though I was just picking up. When I got home, I saw that they threw free desserts in the takeout bag.
I fear that these local businesses are not going to come out of this well if this lockdown goes on much longer.
Before they do that, they could clear NYC of rats. DeBlasio could start posting recipes for tasty rat surprise on the city’s website.
