Different strain perhaps. The Italians may have gotten the bad mutated one. While SK got the original non mutated Bat jumping virus. Or the Chinese may have released multiple strains to hide a more virulent modification.

I suspect many of the underlying health conditions in the dead include diabetes and high blood pressure

Tom Hanks has diabetes. He is in the danger age. But he is getting the best health care money can buy.

His sister said he is having a tough time but he will very likely pull through

In Italy BMI was a deciding factor for who gets a ventilator. They started denying ventilators to people with a BMI above 25 in Italy.

CUOMO: “We did some projections. We think here in New York... we’re looking here at a peak in about five or six weeks. We’re looking at about 110,000 hospitalizations, about 25,000 to 37,000 people needing ICU beds. That vastly overwhelms our healthcare capacity.”

https://twitter.com/ryanstruyk/status/1240731828731949065

So, lets run the numbers based on Cuomo’s projections:

110,000 hospitalizations/.15 = 733,000.

New York state’s population is 19.8M, of which about 60% (11.9M)

733,000/11,900,000 = 6% of the population is infected in the first wave.

I am estimating that 5% of the population will be infected in the first wave, so I believe Cuomo’s estimates are solid.

I am impressed, to be honest.

I just sneak in at 24.something.

The interesting thing is I could weigh 118 pounds and be OK on “healthy” BMI. I think I’d look like an Auschwitz survivor.

not paying much attention to Cuomo but he does seem to be doing a fairly good job in a terrible situation in a state that is a hotspot.

Lord help us..it might help him run for POTUS one day

And...because they were the most impacted by SARs, they locked down right.

A few people dead on the streets made them real compliant.

They don’t need to learn twice.

We should be so lucky.

Cumom actually understands the numbers, both the quantity and the timing.

That is _rare_ these days...

"Sorry 😳 at least you’re prepared " No, not really. I'm in one of the worst possible positions. I sold my house in Sacramento and moved back to my home town (3 sisters). I have been in a hotel since. Each of my sisters has circumstances that preclude my consideration of staying with any of them, from a 91 year old mother, and one having a heart attack, the other a series of strokes and a heart attack. I won't put any risk on them. I've made full price offers on 9 different houses and haven't been able to get anything through escrow. All my sh!t is in storage, to include firearms, 90 miles away. But I have one now that is likely to close by the end of the month. However, now the county recorders office is closed, the mortgage broker's funders are in Santa Clara under full lockdown. And now the escrow office is closed. WTH? I am buying frozen stuff, juice, nuts etc. from the local Save Mart and keeping it the 1/2 fridge. Going out every 2 days. And now my old hometown is going on lockdown and the hotel says I can't stay more than 30 days without checking out for at least 2 and returning. So NO, I am not prepared at all.

They should be readily available. They are a treatment though, not a prophylactic. The side effects can be “icky.”

I think a better question might be why is S. Korea’s numbers better than Italy.

Only one reason: South Korea took it seriously and almost immediately instituted measures to slow down it's spread so that their healthcare wouldn't be overwhelmed. They did more than what we are doing right now. Italy on the other hand did almost nothing initially. That's the only factor.
