Coronavirus Ravages 7 Members of a Single Family, Killing 3
New York Times ^ | March 18 2020 | Tracey Tully

Grace Fusco — mother of 11, grandmother of 27 — would sit in the same pew at church each Sunday, surrounded by nearly a dozen members of her sprawling Italian-American family. Sunday dinners drew an even larger crowd to her home in central New Jersey.

Now, her close-knit clan is united anew by unspeakable grief: Mrs. Fusco, 73, died on Wednesday night after contracting the coronavirus — hours after her son died from the virus and five days after her daughter’s death, a relative said.

Four other children who contracted coronavirus remain hospitalized, three of them in critical condition, the relative, Roseann Paradiso Fodera, said.

Re: How many of those reported deaths in Italy are Chinese?

About 10 days ago the government said all deaths were Italian citizens.

No news since then.

Italy does not release the ethnicity of any COVID-19 victims.

The USA and Washington state do not release ethnicity, either.

Artcore, regarding the comparison of Coronavirus and Swine Flu.

I agree with you that Swine Flu of 2009 killed, according to the most conservative estimates, about 150.000 people. But that was one mutation of the common flu, with a mortality rate just slightly above the average (<0.03%).

0.03%. That made the Swine Flu of 2009 one of least dangerous pandemics of the last 200 years.

And the flu kills tens of thousands of people each year, yet we should not forget that it also affects a significant fraction of the worlds population (ranging from 5 to >30% according to the strain). The mortality rate of these epidemics has always stayed below 0.2%. The common seasonal flu has a mortality rate of about 0.1%.

Except for one case: the Spanish Flu of 1918, which killed more people than WWI. That disease had a mortality rate of about 2–3%.

Now we are facing a new virus for which people have less innate immunity as for the flu with an estimated mortality rate similar to that of the Spanish Flu which is suspected to be as virulent as the flu. In other words, the virus could be as virulent as the common flu but 30 times more deadly.

The current estimates of the mortality-from-infection rate in Wuhan sit at 4.1% So why expend huge amounts of money and effort, and sacrifice a great deal of economic activity, for a virus that has only killed 638 people as of this writing? Because of the potential for a much bigger disaster if it is not contained

exactly republican - look at the situation in Italy. They also said “What me, worry?” 10 days ago. And look at them now.

My grandfather told me of the mass grave south of the church I grew up in, that was the “pest grave”.

Two outbreaks. First was 1918 flu, second was “yellow fever” which officially was not in Nebraska but he maintained till he died was the source of the second layer.

He and other young men dug the pit and placed the bodied in. In the 50’s, some of the family wanted them moved to more traditional plots, but the church decided not to since they were not sure the risk was gone.

A hundred years ago....

Where do you think those drugs come from?

Even if this is true, there are not enough to treat everyone and China has no real reason to give us any more.

Free Traitors made it so no drugs are made domestically

I hope that medical professionals are noting any commonalities between the afflicted individuals, such as blood types (there is a report of one blood type being possibly more susceptible).

That said, I wish peace for all members of the family, and speedy recoveries for the several still afflicted.

an update -- Cruise ship data helps reveal coronavirus death rate: researchers
Russell and nine other researchers at the school analyzed the data from the cruise ship and, comparing it with Chinese data, estimate that the death rate from the virus is about 1 to 0.5 percent, that's still much deadlier than the flu.

..Out of the 697 who tested positive a month ago, seven people have died on the Diamond Princess cruise ship, 15 remain in critical condition, and 30 were once in critical condition but have improved, according to Japan's Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare. A further 388 have recovered.

...Adjusting for age is important, because the average person on the ship was elderly, according to Japan's Institute of Infectious Diseases. The ship's average age was 58, and 33 percent were 70 or older.

...The researchers used the ship's data to estimate a death rate among those aged over 70 of 9 percent -- a very high death rate.
So this is positive - the death rates are lower - still 10 times higher than the flu, but not 20 times higher as feared

Stick to social distancing and watch out for the over 60 year olds.

And the ‘underlying conditions’ include being overweight.

Not to criticize the family but to carry that kind of weight stresses the body and all aspects of health greatly.

Social distancing and washing your hands every two minutes isn't going to do much good.

The one comfort that can be taken is that the coming warm weather of spring/summer seasons which will kill or lesson this virus.

Re: “COVID-19 spreads fast - faster than influenza”

There is very little hard evidence to support that claim.

The USA is in Week 9 of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Washington state - the most infected state in the USA - has tested 17,105 high risk persons for known exposure to COVID-19, for recent travel history, or for obvious symptoms.

1,187 were positive.

That is 6.9%.

I have tracked this metric for seven days. It started out at 8%.

I compared COVID-19 tests to the first 9 weeks of the USA influenza season.

The USA influenza season started on 01 October 2019.

USA influenza tests started Week 1 with a 1.29% infection rate.

By Week 9, influenza tests were 10.2% positive.

https://www.cdc.gov/flu/weekly/weeklyarchives2019-2020/data/whoAllregt_cl48.html

Anyone who claims that COVID-19 is more infectious than influenza needs to explain those test numbers.

at least 22,000 Americans died of influenza from October to March.

That number is sad, but it's less than 0.1% of 36 million flu cases.

COVID19 has a much higher death rate.

This family alone lost three people. Who's heard of the regular flu doing that?

Protect the elderly and the infirm. Do not bankrupt the USA and destroy our standard of living.

I agree completely on that point.

You feel that 8,938 COVID-19 deaths worldwide merits shutting down our entire economy, but 45,000 U.S. deaths from Influenza (Many infants and children!) doesn’t make you bat an eye!

  Fellow patriotic Americans!!

CHOICE killed about 3,000 future Americans today!!

It did yesterday, and will do also again tomorrow.

  How many did CoronaVirus kill???

American does NOT care about THESE numbers; so why are we all pearlclutchy over a few CV ones?

don’t go for either/or

We can care about both the baby killing and the victims of coronavirus and the flu victims.
