The State of Minnesota's Public Defender's Office has been pushing for the release of jail inmates throughout the State, in order to protect them from the spread of the COVID-19 virus.
Chief Public Defender Bill Ward sent an email to all staffers, urging them to get on board and demand that their clients be released. Some of the clients have not yet been convicted. He also said that the jails are a "petri dish" of infections. This looks to only impact the local and county jails, no mention of releasing inmates early from within the prison system.
This plea has come about just days after the announcement on Friday that the courts are going to be postponing several types of cases, but will continue with the high priority cases. The Minnesota federal court system announced that they will be temporarily suspending all criminal and civil trials starting March 23 through April 27.
According to the Star Tribune; The American Civil Liberties Union of Minnesota (ACLU) planned to write to the governor, courts and corrections officials urging them to consider releasing older inmates and those with underlying health conditions. Officials are also exploring the idea of reducing bonds for non-violent criminals or releasing them on their own recognizance. This comes at a time when a lot of court business is slowing down, in order to keep the virus from spreading and overwhelming the already overburdened health care system.
If you are called for jury duty, have a case already in progress, or have questions, reach out to your County Court Administrator. This is uncharted territory, and with the information changing and updating as frequently as it is, this could be changed as well.
So that...the public gets the disease?
Why can’t they just keep all of the prisoners isolated? That’s what they are expecting the general public to do. My wife and I are doing it right now.

As a side issue, I wonder how many cases will be dropped due to a violation of the right to a speedy trial?
Anyone entering prison would have to be presumed to have CoV if not testing negative as the pct of population is increasingly infected. I would say new prisoner would need to be quarantined otherwise the prison will become a death camp. That would lead to riots and violence.

Yep. The flowers are showing their petals. This is reeking more and more like an attempt to throw the country into a totalitarian state. How long before they deem the POTUS “incompetent” and take control? “Oh it’s a national emergency”.
We are being conned here. I know a woman who had this “coronavirus” last month, and she’s not spring chicken, 77 years old. She told me it’s another version of the flu that took her about a week to overcome. I remember her emailing me that, that it was taking her a long time to get over it, which we both agreed was unusual, but all she did was lay in bed and drink gallons of Gatorade sweating her ass off until it popped and that was that, she went through the gauntlet and survived like most people do with the flu. Yet every single day the media and the government keeps tightening the noose don’t they.
Clean, oil your guns, make sure you got ammo. I really think this could be it. These mofos are making a dash for the prize, don’t be be so sure this President and his families life aren’t being threatened and in the blink of an eye you find yourself in a police state where anyone deemed “infected” aka “conservative” is dragged out of their house and “relocated”
Exactly. Isolate any sick inmates from the rest. It’s no worse than keeping people on a cruise ship.

Here in Michigan they are limiting prison and jail visitation to reduce the spread of Covid-19.
These people are probably safer in jail. You can socially isolate all of them. Just keep them in their cells.

I never knew that prisons and jails were associated with civilization. US has 655/100 k incarceration rate tops in the world and 6x Canada and most Western nations. Does that mean US is 6x more civilized than these other countries on the basis of its exceptionally high rate?
Sure, safe as on a cruise ship or nursing home.
Seems to me they are the safest of everyone. No resturants. No bars. No concert. Not out in public. All you need to do is quarantine the new arrivals and screen them.
