Not sure I fit in here anymore ...

Posted on 03/16/2020 8:43:03 AM PDT by GulfMan

Before you look up my account and call me a noob I have been here since Clinton was President, just under a different user name. I haven't posted in a week or so, I've just been reading and lurking. It has really been an awakening recently to say the least.

I am surprised and maybe even a little shocked by my fellow Freepers. I really kind of thought we were all kind-of like minded (ya, I know, conservatives).

We have the "FluBro's" who are in total denial of what is happening world-wide. It reminds me of the other party and their inability to see and or face the truth and I am just so surprised by that. They are the exact kind of people Italy is warning us about in a new article today. In the fact, the entire nation of Italy scoffed and laughed it off, now they warning us not be like them. I think there are too many in this country like that however, I just spoke to a real estate person in Gulf Shores who said the place was booming, as grandparents/parents were taking their kids down for vacations since school was cancelled. Not a clue.

We have the folks supporting the guys from Tennessee who drove around the country and bought up all of the supplies that people would want to protect themselves from the virus only to list those products on Amazon at outrageous prices were completely justified in the name of free enterprise. Imagine being the type of person that sees a crisis and their plan is to exploit people for money during those times, and then to have other people support them?

We have those who say they will refuse to quarantine and won't be told what to do and want all kinds of places to remain open. It's like cantankerous old coots who are stuck in their ways and feel their freedom trumps everyone and everything around them, they owe their brother nothing. I'm embarrassed in part to be in the same boat as many on this forum. The constant arguing between those that know this is a serious situation and the FluBro's is tiresome.

That said, this is the best site for following the Coronavirus outbreak as people are local everywhere and sharing local news we wouldn't get anywhere else. I will continue to lurk for sure.

I hope everyone stays safe and pray this passes quickly, that as few as possible die, and the economy rebounds strongly, and we get back to living the American dream.

God Bless

We are men and women who use facts and data, then Christian and Enlightenment principles, to inform conclusions and emotions.

Unfortunately, so far, consistent and accurate facts and data are lacking in this novel situation. We all need to realize that.

The coronavirus is undoubtedly serious, but all credible reports I've seen so far indicate that it's about as serious as the flu. The flu is not a joke - so far this flu season it's taken over 20,000 lives in the US. But life doesn't come to a stop over the flu. The difference with the coronavirus is that we don't have a vaccine yet.

However, wild estimates by former Obama officials of 1,000,000 deaths in the US are simply not credible. I'll keep washing my hands regularly, and I carry a bottle of Purell and I use it. I am not going to theaters or malls. But I'm not going to join unthinking mobs hoarding toilet paper and bottled water, sorry. If I get coronavirus, I'll isolate myself from family members and get over it like most of the people who've gotten it so far have - I'm not elderly, I have no pre-existing health conditions.

The hysterics will continue to be hysterical and create ridiculous shortages of basic home products - whipping yourself into a frenzy is fun for some folks and profitable for others. But hysteria is hard to sustain and the idiots will calm down sooner or later. Real life is not an episode of The Walking Dead.

You cannot control all people, every emergency shows this. You can have a violent storm bearing down and people strolling the beaches. Then you have adrenaline junkies who like to play on the edge for the rush. and of course the just plain idiots. I think most on FR are determining their own response and what they will or not do. Certainly everyone is informed. So scrolling comes in handy if you don’t like the responses....

(((Additionally we all know this country gets hyped but because of that we are first to act.)))

“..Over 80,000 Americans Died of Flu in 2018... 90 percent of those deaths were in people over age 65”

That’s interesting. In the cemetery in Texas where some of my family rests, there are many graves from 1918. Most show dates of birth/death indicating infants or toddlers.

I agree 100%. A lot of people around here act like they’re running for Mayor of Amity.

“The constant arguing between those that know this is a serious situation and the FluBro’s is tiresome. “

Your first mistake is seeing the sides as people that arent “taking it seriously”, and you.

Plenty of people find the panic, and apocalyptic ravings of loons to be absurd, while they clearly see that precautions as simple as washing your hands and keeping distance from people, while clearly seeing that people are recovering from this thing + scientists are making incredible headway, are reasons enough to calm the hell down.

Th real sides are the panicked nutcases, the people that think they are too good to have to do anything, and people in the center.

Lots of us are in the center. Try it.

Many of the best minds left FR in the days of banning any criticism of Trump George W. Bush.

The sad thing is that those people would be considered prescient heroes today.

“I agree 100%. A lot of people around here act like they’re running for Mayor of Amity.”

People worry way too much about comments in the ether. Do you think the people crying foul are running around wiping their dirty hands on counters everywhere? Let them rant, they hurt nothing.

The panic crowd is more dangerous.

As for people making jokes, go look at WWII. Joking was everywhere, check out Willie and Joe.

As for us, we are going for a nice drive in the country to look for wild horses.

This is a non-opus-opus.

As such, I must reject it.

The “Spanish Flu” of 1918-19 was very different than a typical flu season in recent decades. The victims back then were disproportionately YOUNGER people — and most older people seemed to have a general immunity to the disease. I read an article over the weekend suggesting that the immunity among older people may have been developed from their prior exposure to a similar viral strain from the 1870s or 1880s.

80% or better recover from Coronavirus. So even if you get it you’ll likely recover. The idea is to not have everyone with the flu running to be hospitalized unless necessary, as with elderly etc.....and to prevent as much spread as possible.

Only you can determine that for yourself. Either you feel
comfortable or you don’t. That’s for you to determine.
Things change and the world goes on. If you don’t like
things you see here then move on. Don’t put yourself into
contortions about it.

My thoughts exactly. I’ve been lurking here my whole life. I’ve seen it change at least 6 times over the last 21 years. It’s still a good news site, but the replies are telling.
