The head of Michael Bloomberg’s presidential campaign in North Carolina made a homophobic crack in front of a reporter while talking about Pete Buttigieg during a meeting with local preachers.
The staffer, James Mitchell, started naming Bloomberg’s rivals: “You have Biden, Sanders, Warren, Butti-Jay,” he said, according to a story written by veteran political reporter Ben Jacobs, which was posted in Medium.com.
Mitchell, then gestured toward a minister, Dwayne Walker, and added: “Pastor, you got me saying what you were saying — Butti-Jay,” to laughter in the room.
Mitchell added: “He said something different — I’m cleaning it up.”
It was a riff on “Butti-gay.”
Buttigieg, the former mayor of South Bend, Ind., is a married gay man.
Former Houston Mayor Annise Parker, President & CEO of LGBTQ Victory Fund, slammed the remark as homophobic.
“Targeting candidates with juvenile nicknames based on personal characteristics is a Trump playbook tactic and further evidence Bloomberg is running in the wrong primary. The state campaign director’s homophobic remarks are not unlike Bloomberg’s past comments targeting lesbians, trans people, women and others.”
Mitchell, in a statement released by the Bloomberg campaign, regretted his remark.
“Someone made an inappropriate remark, I tried to diffuse it at the time. I wish I had been stronger in my response,” he said.

THe funny thing is, you can watch a youtube video that plays his own introduction, while a woman explains exactly what the sounds are;
and then go to the campaign page, and find they tell you to pronounce it differently.
But the first syllable is definitely boot, not butt.

The campaign to make people not fear the real horrors they can inflict upon a society started in earnest in the 90s.
It was a very successful campaign.
Someone with a rudimentary command of the King’s English should explain to these dipsticks what a phobia is.

He is a socialist - where he parks his willie doesn’t change that
There is nothing I’ve seen that would lead me to believe that he is competent or qualified for the office the presidency

I’m disgusted, not scared... And quite intolerant as well.
Don’t have to go for the slur though. I just go with “idiot” or “deranged”. If someone wants to pursue my reasoning, I generally take the time to explain biology to them.
What’s homophobic about that? A phobia is an unwarranted or unreasonable fear. That sounds more like plain ol’ derision to me!

I don't know when "homophobia" was coined, maybe in the 1980s or 1990s, but it is a loaded term, intended to imply that there is something wrong with people who don't applaud homosexuality.
A better term for opposition to homosexuality might be miseuryproctia combining "mis-" (hate) "eury-" (wide) and "proktos" (anus)...there is an ancient Greek word euryproktia which the dictionary quaintly defines as "lewdness." But obviously "miseuryproctia" would never catch on.
Interesting point. The great German poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe heard someone refer to an "automobile," which in his era was simply a steam-powered tractor. It wasn't that Goethe couldn't believe that such a device could exist, he couldn't believe that anyone could be so sloppy as to mix a Greek and Latin root. He assured people that it should be called an "autokinetikon."
