A man died in what authorities described as a rocket crash in the desert in Barstow on Saturday afternoon.
The deadly crash was reported just before 2 p.m. on a private property along Highway 247, the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department said in a written statement. "A man was pronounced deceased after the rocket crashed in the open desert during a rocket launch event," the statement said. Medical help was already on-site, but the pilot could not be saved.
Authorities did not identity the pilot pending positive identification by coroner's officials. Witnesses and news reports indicted the launch was an event hosted by local daredevil "Mad" Mike Hughes, an amateur rocket builder intent on proving that the Earth is flat.

JATO car?
LMBO the first time I heard that story on the old G. Gordon Liddy radio show.
Lots of free-spirited desert rats live out there in the remote Mojave. This is one of them.
And as I recall from a visit to Barstow a number of years ago, the World's largest McDonald's restaurant.
Damn spell check ruining my joke. Retarded. Retarded. Not regarded.
He didn't prove the Earth is flat, but that he is flat.
I hope He got a
Good Book Deal.
.
“We were somewhere around Barstow on the edge of the desert when the drugs began to take hold. I remember saying something like “I feel a bit lightheaded; maybe you should drive....” And suddenly there was a terrible roar all around us and the sky was full of what looked like huge bats, all swooping and screeching and diving around the car, which was going about a hundred miles an hour with the top down to Las Vegas.”
“the launch was an event hosted by local daredevil “Mad” Mike Hughes, an amateur rocket builder intent on proving that the Earth is flat.”
i’m assuming that the fatal crash means that the Earth is NOT flat ...
intent on proving that the Earth is flat.
LOL! Is that Hunter S. Thompson?
Wow ! I know Apple Valley has some serious fixtures but this guy really takes the cake
Rest in peace crazy dude
Met and hung out with “Mad Mike” a year or two ago. Yep, pretty crazy. A couple of other launches damn near killed him. He was launching in Amboy, CA then and the BLM was pestering him. I always knew that one day he’d auger in.
Sad that he’s gone, would call him an acquaintance rather than a friend. We actually made him an honorary Clamper (ECV), so I have to say that he’s a Brother gone to the Golden Hills.
R.I.P. Brother
Oh, and by the way, he was a candidate for Governor of California. Probably better than the a-hole we have now.
Turns out the earth was.... splat.
He proved the earth won’t be flat where he impacted.
yeap. he's flat
And somewhere on the exact other side of the world, someone tripped over a bump that appeared from nowhere.
Very sad. The guy was a nice, disabled person with an IQ of maybe 80. He lacked proper parachutes and proper tools. He did not know that in 1960 the engineers from North American were experimenting with both parachutes and hang gliders at Edwards Air Force Base in order to bring the Command Module back to earth.
Someone should have intervened or taken the keys or disabled the engine.
He did not know that Pythagorus in 500 BC knew the earth was round by watching eclipses, the Apollo rockets were locomotives designed like a Swiss watch, and the Space Shuttle is the best machine ever built.
Moral of the story: please don’t get killed by dumbness.
Mad Mike is flat. Or maybe pieces.
