Hundreds of thousands of Broward County residents will have to stop recycling newspapers, pamphlets and other mixed paper because people have been tossing too much garbage into their recycling bins.
McCormick said the reason is twofold:
First, she said Broward (with a population of nearly 2 million) is putting trash in the recycling bin, causing contamination rates of 30 percent. That means paper that could be recycled is getting mixed with dirty diapers, bowling balls and leftover spaghetti. Unable to clean it enough to sell it, the paper gets sent to the landfill anyway.
The mixed paper that is finding a market has to be of the best quality, and that means it cant have excessive contamination rates coming in the door, she said. Broward County is not finding a home [for its paper] because the quality is so bad. The contamination is so high we are not able to get it clean enough.
McCormick said the demand from China for recycled paper has dried up, and the demand from other importers India, Mexico and within the U.S. is not as strong.

I stopped following recycling rules when they said “No pizza boxes in the recycle.”.
I remember those log-rollers! Very efficient and fun.
I make these out of newspapers for fire starters. They work like a charm:
I also make a lot of my seed-starting pots from newspapers and toilet paper cores cut in half when I’m starting plants in the spring for the veggie garden. Easy-peasy and cheap!
We shouldn’t recycle paper anyway.
The environmental cost to bleach old paper, convert it back to pulp and remanufacture it as paper is the same as starting from a new piece of wood. (Unlike Aluminium)Paper is completely reneawable
Neither paper or glass needs to be recycled. Both are basically innocuous environmentally. You just compost the paper and the glass is just rock. It can be mixed as concrete/asphalt aggregate or busted up and dopped in the ocean
Glad I haven’t wasted too much time catering to the lefts obsession with recycling. At every town “recycling” center there are trash nazis that like making people do unnecessary thing. That’s why I pay somebody to just take everything away. If they want to sort it they can.
Which is good enough to sit around the fire at the end of an evening.
I live here and I absolutely understand this. We have people from many different countries who just don’t understand what recycling is.
> Recycling and trash collection all have a high skim rate.
Tucson, AZ pays from $37 to $49 a ton to a recycling company.
The landfill charges $32 a ton for them to drop off trash.
“all of the recycling stuff is carried off to a big hole and buried.”
That’s probably better than burying everything mixed together.
I am thinking that someone who invents a means of automating the separation process, if at a reasonable cost, could make some money.
Isn’t that where Florida Man is from?
The dirty secret is that is has for a long time been automated, very efficiently. It’s just a matter of whether or not recycle centers / trash collectors use the tech. I watched a documentary showing this more than 10 years ago.
I didn’t know I had another brother.
Laziness results in ineffective recycling, as well as non-existent enforcement to prevent pilfering. But, at least people feel good about recycling.
I have a wonder wood burning stove and all of my paper (as well as much of my neighbors paper like newspapers) ends up in there. And boy is it super nice heat!

Recycling is another way of Liberals recycling your money. They recycle your money into their (and their cronies) pockets.
I just do it because it’s FUN, and it also makes a longer-burning ‘starter’ than just crumpled up paper. YMMV. ;)
