Broward County, you’ll have to stop recycling paper. Here’s why.
South Florida Sun Sentinel ^ | 2/21/20 | Lisa J. Huriash

Hundreds of thousands of Broward County residents will have to stop recycling newspapers, pamphlets and other mixed paper because people have been tossing too much garbage into their recycling bins.

McCormick said the reason is twofold:

First, she said Broward (with a population of nearly 2 million) is putting trash in the recycling bin, causing contamination rates of 30 percent. That means paper that could be recycled is getting mixed with dirty diapers, bowling balls and leftover spaghetti. Unable to clean it enough to sell it, the paper gets sent to the landfill anyway.

“The mixed paper that is finding a market has to be of the best quality, and that means it can’t have excessive contamination rates coming in the door,” she said. “Broward County is not finding a home [for its paper] because the quality is so bad. The contamination is so high we are not able to get it clean enough.”

McCormick said the demand from China for recycled paper has dried up, and the demand from other importers — India, Mexico and within the U.S. — is not as strong.

The Democrats in Broward are either too stupid or too antisocial to recycle properly.

I saw a video on YouTube, where a guy takes all his paper scraps. He asks them into a mush and represses the mush into paper logs. It works well and is probably more useful than toilet paper.

The government even screws up the trash. But, you must still pay for “the service”.

Okay, I have been hearing this nonsense that one little piece of something that doesn't belong in that bin can ruin the entire truckload of recyclables.

At that point I realized that, if that is true, nothing is being recycled, because there is always going to be something that shouldn't be in that truckload, considering how many containers of recyclables one truck will pick up in a day.

Recycling and trash collection all have a high skim rate. Contracts are signed and cronies are killing it.

My operating assumption for years is that all of the “recycling” stuff is carried off to a big hole and buried.

I pay no attention to any “rules” about trash disposal.

Since Florida is supposed to be underwater soon due to rising sea levels, isn’t it a good idea to use land fills to build up the land?

Recycling. One of those “good ideas” that wasn’t.

Replace your paper bin with a burn-barrel.

CO2 is very recyclable. Just ask the plants.

Broward county has a long history of corruption and incompetence. Other communities manage to recycle paper, so why can’t Broward?

The Democrats in Broward are either too stupid or too antisocial to recycle properly.

Rules only apply to others, not them.

The little guy should run for public office—perhaps Director of Sanitation. ;-)

I saw a video on YouTube, where a guy takes all his paper scraps. He asks them into a mush and represses the mush into paper logs.

Years ago we had a newspaper-to-fireplace-log maker. It consisted of a shallow trough with a winding device mounted above it. Some water and detergent went into the trough, and the newspaper slid through it as you wound it, wetting it. When you had wound up the desired thickness you removed it and let it dry. Burned faster than a log, but was a great starter for the real wood.
