Ja'Net DuBois, one of the stars from the TV series "Good Times," has died.
Police in Glendale, Calif., said they received a report about the DuBois' death late Monday. She appeared to have died of natural causes and no investigation is ongoing, police Sgt. Dan Stubbs said. No additional details, including her age, were immediately available.
BernNadette Stanis, who played Thelma Evans Anderson on Good Times, said she learned of DuBois death Tuesday from the actress daughter. Stanis said DuBois appeared to be in good health and they had appeared at a signing event two weeks ago. She noted that DuBois kept to herself and no one knew exactly how old she was.
DuBois had a prolific career beyond the 1970s hit Good Times, winning two Emmy Awards for her voice work on the WB series The PJs. She also composed and sang the theme song for The Jeffersons." DuBois song Movin on Up provided a joyous intro to The Jeffersons during the shows 10-season run.

I just read on wiki about Ralph Carter who played Michael Evans or JJ’s brother. The shows co creator was named Mike Evans. Coincidence?
I didn’t know that was why Ester left the series.
I’ve not hear that before just now. I could believe it, though. Easy to imagine Norman Lear having hard-fast stereotypic notions of how all black families operate.
She finally got her piece of the pie.

So he was born in about 1951. Are these children listed in birth order? Did she give birth to any of them? If the one who "died of cancer in 1987 at age 36" was her natural son, and perhaps her youngest, did she bear him at age 6, 13, or 19?
Not to mention the potential criminal matter pertaining to Mr. Peters.
That's what I get for trying to pull up some quick basic stats. The answers are probably out there somewhere, but sheesh.
Perhaps Barbie did the research. "Math is hard."
Ja'Net DuBois was a talented lady. I didn't know she composed those theme songs. "Movin' On Up" -- iconic!
RIP
For the youngins around here:
Hope she's got her dee-lux apartment in the sky.
I loved one line her character said on the show:
“I like my coffee like I like my men - black and strong!”
Lovely, talented lady. RIP
*Esther Rolle had to be one of the least attractive stars of a show I have ever seen.
I’m a big fan of the show and the first three seasons are laugh-out-loud funny. Season 4 was ok, but the show was really on fumes during seasons 5 and 6. Ja’Net was amazing and I always thought she was beautiful.
The real problems for the show began with the JJ character breaking out. Rolle and Amos wanted the show to be funny, but still focus on serious issues. They both felt that the show became a mockery with all the attention given to JJ. Right or wrong, his “Dy-no-mite!” phrase was a winner and something to listen for every week. Jimmy Walker and John Amos have both talked about this issue, and how it affected the show.
Really liked her. RIP.
Not a lot of people knew that was her singing The Jeffersons theme.
Nurse Kellye. Darn.
It’s impossible to watch the dog food episode of “Good Times” without laughing your head off.
She was pretty. I remember one episode where she was dressed in a tennis outfit, yowza!
“rival show The Jeffersons”
Well, it was the same guys writing and producing both shows, so I doubt there was any rivalry there.
Florida was originally the maid on Maude, who was Edith Bunker’s cousin.
Ja’Net also co-wrote “Movin On Up.”
I liked Good Times but I never believed all those smart and highly motivated characters would be living in the projects year after year, especially Willona. They would have long since moved away from the crime-ridden projects.
Ja’Net was a beautiful lady. RIP.
Enjoyed her work. RIP.
Miss DuBois was “fudging” her age (like so many in the business) by at least 10 or more years (she could get away with it since she looked young). She had kids that were already in their 20s when she was on “Good Times” when she claimed to be just 29 when it premiered. Her daughter, Rani, who popped up as a high school classmate of the boys on “What’s Happening !!” was absolutely stunning.
I’m guessing she was 87 and not 74 as reported.
