The 50 best reasons to live in New Jersey
The Star Ledger ^ | 02.15.20 | Peter Genovese

Posted on 02/18/2020 6:49:19 PM PST by Coleus

There are about 9 million of us living here, and we all can’t be delusional.

Apart from those who live here primarily because of job or family, most New Jerseyans live here because they like it here! New York City is a quick PATH or train ride away — why live there?

The Shore, the Pine Barrens, beautiful countryside, diners, beaches, the nation’s most diverse city, small towns, great scenic highways — does any state pack as much variety into one compact package as New Jersey? Nope.

Here are the 50 best reasons to live in New Jersey, from someone who was born here (Trenton) and has travelled endlessly to every part of the state. This list could have easily included 100 or more items.

What are your favorite reasons to live here? Let us know in the comments section. The list is not ranked. Roadside farm stands

Forget that store-bought, grown-in-California, -Mexico, -Peru or wherever produce. Nothing beats a tomato, peach or other fruit or vegetable from a Jersey roadside stand. Scores of family-run stands dot the landscape, and there are an additional 144 community farmers markets in towns across the state. N.J. ranks third nationally in cranberry production, fourth in tomatoes, bell peppers, peaches and cucumbers (cukes? who knew?) and sixth in blueberries. We’re not called the Garden State for nothing.

You're welcone....that situation came about because a delinquent father used HSing as a shield to neglect/effectively starve his children. The NJ SCOTUS had ruled decades earlier that HSing didn't require govt oversight, so because of this tragedy a bunch of statist legislators- chiefly Loretta Weinberg - crafted legislation to turn NJ HSing into PA or NY with local school control of books and mandated testing etc...because you can't let a crisis go to waste.

You'd expect, given the stereotype of NJ "conservatives" that the HSers would happily accept state capital control. It turns out, the NJ HSers are anything but pushovers- Soon afterward, a small group of home-schooling parents began following Weinberg around the capitol. The barrage of phone calls from home-schooling advocates so jammed her office phone lines that staffers had to use their private cellphones to conduct business. “You would have thought I’d recommended the end of the world as we know it,” said Weinberg. “Our office was besieged.”

The statists lost, the HSers won, and liberty was preserved. All in NJ...whoda thunk.

“Do you remember the long, lousy ride home on Sunday night having to stop at all those toll plazas on the Parkway?”
Especially going out in the sun for the first time and having that horrendous drive back home looking like an Italian lobster!

Here in Georgia we have a significantly larger “beauty radius”. The whole state is gorgeous, including large swaths of its cities. Of course, we are delighted when ya’ll decide to stay put up there.

Have you ever been to Georgia? I didn't think so. Oh, we can own most any firearm we desire and even shoot them.

But, by all means, stay in New York. Its better for you there.

un-Christian generalization: NJ people are the most selfish, arrogant, condescending, rude and offensive people on earth (probably from north NJ). I think they have to be that way to survive there......

One of them exemplifying the above was a sales gal who once worked for me in Virginia. True story:

Then she took a trip on an NJ flight that had only NJ people on it. Afterwards she told me she always wondered why non-NJ folk were so repulsed by NJ people. After she was on this flight, she told us how offensive she found everyone on the plane. She then told me and her co-workers, “I now understand why you hate us from NJ so much!”

Just met a wonderful conservative couple who just moved from NJ to Fredricksburg, VA, retired mechanical engineer.

Their property taxes in NJ were equal to 8 times their taxes in VA......$16k/year on a modest house.........

No idea how the average family can afford to live there......

Oh, boy, yeah. Riding in cars with no air conditioning, blistering skin sticking to the vinyl car seats...I remember getting rubbed down with Noxzema (sp?)by Mom, Grandma...in an attempt to combat the burn. Never worked...

I remember watching my TV (in my home now in NC) a few years back seeing the reports about Hurricane Sandy and how it tore up the Jersey Shore, seeing what was left of the Seaside Heights roller coaster swamped, out in the ocean...How many times I rode that thing...like so many memories, washed away by time...

Same here, with Seaside and the roller coaster and vinyl seats and no A/C . Lots of great memories washed away. I wound up in NC as well at the Outer Banks. Don’t miss the north at all.

You still chose the coast, huh? I’m way inland (in the vicinity of Greensboro). Now the “shore” is a 3 1/2 hour drive (no tolls!), with air conditioning, sunscreen, little to no bumper to bumper traffic.

Dela-where? Has lower property taxes than either VA or NJ and nicer beaches as well. Other than that I can’t think of reasons to live in Delaware.
