I taught school for more than twenty years. The kids (and their parents) have changed. The kid is always right. In my last decade teaching, two very young kids (under ten) broke the legs of teachers. In another incident five sixth grade students gang raped a special ed girl in the parking lot and returned to school the next day......strutting. I was threatened and stood up to another kid who went next door and beat up a teacher....who quit the next day. I don’t know what happened in this case, but I’d wait to hear more before casting judgment.
Yep, most of my long term friends are teachers, I’ve heard the horror stories. One has a student who identifies as a female cat, and he has to accommodate that person.
Did this “tantrum” perhaps include assault and destruction of property, and have the parents not taken care of that in the past?
Ding ding ding...I’m going with your answer! And if this is the other side, the physical restraint required by the staff to stop the student from harming others or continuing to destroy property would have been deemed excessive by someone and the school officials and district would be in legal hot water.

When as child is out of control, and potentially harming others, she cannot be allowed to remain in a situation where that continues. You cannot blame the authorities for taking action to prevent harm to others. It may, indeed, have been necessary to sedate the child. Anyone who harms others needs to be controlled.

Yes it can. A family member and I utilized it to protect another family member who was in severe crisis mode. Then, I flew down with yet another family member and brought him home.
It can be a real Godsend for some, but it can sure be misused. And some of those facilities are very abusive toward the clients. I witnessed that first hand.

My oldest son has a learning disability due to him being 12# at birth and I was in labor too long (it was Christmas eve and no one wanted to deal with it). He was born 12/26. Oxygen deprivation caused learning disability which we didn’t find out about disability until he was 5. Had him professionally tested due to complaints at daycare of him acting up, etc.
He had ADHD, oppositional defiance disorder as well as IQ of 69.
Anyways back then (39 years ago) they put him on Ritalin. It would work for a while at school but then wear off and he would get out of control. They hired another worker to walk him outside of the school to get him calmed down. Sometimes I would have to go get him. I worked with a behavior specialist as when he would act out- hit himself, throw things, I would have to sit on him for 10 min or so until he calmed down. He was in special ed classes all the way until he graduated from high school. Long story, many years of working with specialists and getting him the help needed, nearly destroyed our marriage and family. But we did it. He is doing well for the most part now. I gave him to the Lord throughout the years is the only way we all survived. I did eventually take him off Ritalin as he was like a zombie when on it.
This girl has obvious issues and hope she gets the help needed.

Irrespective of they may be or may not be, schools are not daycare facilities.
I agree, with your hope that this *family* gets help.
After 33 years of teaching, I have always thought that having a special needs child is as challenging as having a child who is truly talented or has a high IQ.
These special cases need *helicopter* parenting.

This 6yo girl was in a special needs class.
Yes, the child should’ve been removed from class, if she was throwing a tantrum.
But, sedating her and holding her for 2 days at a mental health facility was an over-the-top reaction.
