From the article:

“An incident report filed by police noted that the 4-foot tall girl ‘was destroying school property, attacking staff, out of control, and running out of school.

‘The subject has been diagnosed with disruptive mood, disregulation disorder, and is prescribed Adderall,’ it continued.

Nadia was diagnosed with ADHD in 2017 and is waiting for test results to determine whether she has autism. Nadia is on medication for mental health issues and is in a special needs class”

All that and shes only six?

There is NO such thing as “voluntary treatment” in the case of a child below the age of general legal consent - can sign legal documents for themselves.

Schools should ONLY be able to

1) Call parents to come get a child the school determines in cannot control;

2) Hold children in constrained but safe conditions - padded room if need be - until a parent or guardian arrives;

3) Seek police assistance in locating a parent and bringing the parent to the school;

4) SUGGEST (not legally demand) that a parent seek psychological and or psychiatric help with their child to achieve behavior compatible with the public classroom setting;

5) Suspend a child from attending school when behavior problems occur;

6) Permanently suspend a child for remainder of a school year if behavior problems persist without improvement.

That should be at most what a school should be allowed to do.

Florida has weird laws. A nieces husband got six months for euthanizing a 14 year old cat with cancer. The cat couldn’t dig a hole to defecate in.

If the child was out of control, she should’ve been suspended or expelled. Let the parents deal with her tantrums & find another way to educate her. This kind of treatment for a 6-yr old is ridiculous.

I’m not sure I care for the law, but if your kid is throwing things and harming staff, then we have a problem.

The school social worker would have a court ordered psychiatric examination and a full investigation of their own personal life.

Most likely a young liberal female who aborted all her own children.

My sister manages such a room. It is a combined tutoring center / calming room for kids having meltdowns and losing control. Most of the time my sister and her colleagues are tutoring, but an incoming basket case has top priority.

It’s a very effective solution.

Calling the police, not calling her parents, putting her in the psych ward for TWO days — I cannot imagine a worse treatment of a young child.

My wife is psychiatrist. If she did this they would have her medical license.

I would apply the Americans with Disabilities Act and sue the school for mistreatment of the child.

Government school is child abuse.

It will get worse 24/7 until parents stop putting their children in public schools.

The psychologists and social workers do not have medical licenses thus they are limited in what they can do.

If a biochemical imbalance caused the behavior and not pure psychological, the parent would own this school.

Who was this mental health professional? Like the kids name is in the article, but not the anonymous "mental health professional". Having worked helping get kids off or Ritalin, I can say that about 80% of the time, a good breakfast with protein like eggs instead of coco puffs and peanut butter and celery as a snack instead instead of double fudge elfin cookies helps a lot to smooth out behavior. also setting expectations to the child for proper behavior and modeling that behavior really helps a lot. ( In other words don't raise your voice, get down to their level to talk about issues, and never use threats as a control mechanism).

*All that and shes only six?*

I have had 4 y/o pre-schoolers out of control. Damage property and other children. Par for the course.

Many of these kids are being raised by siblings. I ask, where was momma? In jail w/ a drug habit, more likely. The dad? What father?

Gone is the day when kids were raised by a frying pan toting grandma who ruled the roost. She would have come to the school and pulled the kid by the ear, all the way home. And put the child to bed w/out any supper.

Today, a guardian shows up with an ombudsman, pro bono lawyer and a social worker. Times have changed.
