It was a historic 92nd Academy Awards with a first Best Picture recipient not in the English language in Parasite adding an element of surprise to a largely predictable winners list. There was something historic in the ratings for the 2020 Oscars too an historic low.
Last year, the Academy Awards bet on no traditional host, kicked off the night with an energetic performance by Queen and Adam Lambert, employed not hosts with Saturday Night Live pedigree (Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph) to do an opening monologue, kept the shows length under 3.5 hours and created a musical moment with Lady Gaga and Bradley Coopers performance of Shallow.
The result was the first ratings increase in five years, so the Oscars tried to replicate the formula Sunday: no traditional host, high-octane opening number by Janelle Monae. monologue by SNL alums Steve Martin and Chris Rock, and a surprise music performance by Eminem aimed at creating a buzzy moment.
But the ceremony, which clocked in at 3 hours and 35 minutes up from 3 hours, 23 minutes in 2019 could not repeat last years ratings turnaround, drawing 23.6 million total viewers and a 5.3 rating in the adults 18-49 demographic, based on Nielsens Live+Same Day Fast National ratings ordered by ABC. That is down double-digits from last years 29.6 million and a 7.7 rating of among adults 18-49.
Overall, the Oscars was the most watched entertainment special since last years ceremony, topping the Grammy Awards and Golden Globes in total viewers. Other broadcast networks didnt try to compete Sunday, with all airing repeats.

Its a televised spectacle, so they want it to be aired during a dead time in the sports calendar between the Super Bowl and the NCAA basketball tournaments.
That is because they allow that queer in a dress that viewership is down. It will be even less next year.
It was. It’s just not labeled as such.
23.6 million brain dead Americans, THAT’S HORRIBLE. what worse is these people have the right to vote. Just Shoot Me!
Touche...
We didnt turn on our tv yesterday. j
Oscar who?
I don’t know how they drew that many viewers.
Silly people who play pretend giving each other awards for playing pretend.
Most people just tune in to see the dresses anyway. I didn’t even bother to do that this year.
I turned it on for 2 minutes. Just as Brad Pitt won. Turned the channel as soon as he mentioned John Bolton.
What a bunch of tools.
I barely watch movies anymore, never in the theater and barely on TV.
They all make me too sick to watch them.
How many of those registered as watching, just had it turned on and turned down in case something interesting happened.
Just wondering.
They need to redo the whole show....It is just boring..I think the people who had it on like my wife ...do not really watch it ..she was on her device..and I was reading a book...
The movies suck for the most part...Disney makes out because there kids movies..
I saw two last year..only because my wife wanted to see them..
Even at 1.60 rental at Red Box ...it is hard to find anything..
Didn’t article say first time ratings increase?
The after Oscar party was sponsored by In & Out Burger. Check out all the celebrities munching on burgers on Daily Mail article
Don’t these folks want the little people to go vegan to save the planet?
I hear there is real estate available in Wuhan.
...and records are made to be broken...
“Maybe they should insult the audience more next year.”
...I’m sure they will. Especially after another win in November. No wait a minute. They’ll all be leaving the country so never mind.
Actually it really is sad.....the Academy Awards Gala is trucking down the same path as the dying Democrat Party. Amazing how dumb both of this once great organizations were at one time...but no more.
Shucks...you mention Robert De Nero, Brad Pitt, Barack Hussein Obama, Nancy Pelosi, etc., and millions of TVs are shut off instantly!!!
Those bottom-of-the-barrel TV viewer numbers are devastating for the USA film industry...across the board!!!
Someone accidentally put ‘million’ behind the 23.6.
23.6 million more than they deserve.
The 0scars have always been a political event.
