It was a historic 92nd Academy Awards with a first Best Picture recipient not in the English language in Parasite adding an element of surprise to a largely predictable winners list. There was something historic in the ratings for the 2020 Oscars too an historic low.
Last year, the Academy Awards bet on no traditional host, kicked off the night with an energetic performance by Queen and Adam Lambert, employed not hosts with Saturday Night Live pedigree (Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph) to do an opening monologue, kept the shows length under 3.5 hours and created a musical moment with Lady Gaga and Bradley Coopers performance of Shallow.
The result was the first ratings increase in five years, so the Oscars tried to replicate the formula Sunday: no traditional host, high-octane opening number by Janelle Monae. monologue by SNL alums Steve Martin and Chris Rock, and a surprise music performance by Eminem aimed at creating a buzzy moment.
But the ceremony, which clocked in at 3 hours and 35 minutes up from 3 hours, 23 minutes in 2019 could not repeat last years ratings turnaround, drawing 23.6 million total viewers and a 5.3 rating in the adults 18-49 demographic, based on Nielsens Live+Same Day Fast National ratings ordered by ABC. That is down double-digits from last years 29.6 million and a 7.7 rating of among adults 18-49.
Overall, the Oscars was the most watched entertainment special since last years ceremony, topping the Grammy Awards and Golden Globes in total viewers. Other broadcast networks didnt try to compete Sunday, with all airing repeats.

So “Parasite” won best film?
Metaphor alert.
I heard the first award of the night became political, right out of the gate. Obama’s pal Brad Pitt made an idiotic crack about the Senate not being fair to John Bolton.
Oscar who? There were awards? Who knew?
Oscar better be watching his backside, because it just got a kicking.
Next year add Greta; she can tell them to turn out the lights, and add an “How dare you!”. The audience will love it.
That was the Academy Awards Show? I thought it was a DNC rally.
That’s tooooo damn high!! C’mon man we can do better next year! Tank’em!!
Thats still an incredible amount of people, even though it is shrinking.
If you had asked me: how many people watch the Oscars? I would have said maybe 1 million?”
Hollywood really needs to move to Beijing. We should start a movie industry here in America for people who actually like Americans. We have a core group of actors and a lot of behind the scenes people who are loyal Americans, the rest can go where they think the money is and find people who agree with them.
I work in Hollywood and NEVER watched it for the past 10 years..our production company currently is on-location outside of L.A and we do this intentionally.
Couldn’t pay me enough to watch that swill... can barely handle even watching a movie they make anymore with all the lecturing and pointless token PC SJW horsecrap they shove in them...
The Oscar ceremonies were held at the earliest date in modern times. In the past, it used to be held in late March, but now it’s mostly in late February.
I heard that and immediately turned it off.
What the hell does the very intelligent, charming, MBA Harvard graduate Brad Pitt know from John Bolton?
They need to stop this nonsense. It’s not entertaining.
“Next year add Greta; she can tell them to turn out the lights, and add an How dare you!. The audience will love it”.
And then they’ll get in their limos or airplanes and go home to their walled mansions with their armed security guards.
Did Felix get an award too?
I thought it was just a throwaway joke to warm up the crowd. His heart was not in to it, as if he didn’t want to say it. Kind of like The Rock doing the pedophile type joke on SNL, and then of course the curly headed dude who isn’t funny did.....Ricky Bobby...race car driver....see how famous HE is.
The only thing that could have been worse was if Meghan Markle and Harry announced the winners.
Had I known Steve Martin and Chris Rock would be on I would have watched just to see them.
Sadly there are still millions of people who love the Oscars. But the show has lost nearly half it’s audience from 6 years ago, so that’s a good sign.
A Couple of things;
Viewership is in decline when the show is no longer entertaining, the politics isn’t entertaining as illustrated by Brad Pitt’s attempt at humor and the joke BOMBED.
2nd, the movie this year were just OK, as illustrated by a S. Korean film getting many awards.
3rd, if they thought Eminem would boost ratings, why the surprise, why not advertise it.
4th, PC is killing the show. They all moan about lack of women and Blacks, it’s tiring.
Last, the personalities are no longer likeable, people don’t root for some of these quacks, they rooted for Jack Nicolson, John Wayne, Steve McQueen, you name them.. and all the old greats who refrained from politics and said something memorable or interesting.
