SARASOTA, Fla. A 107-year-old Florida man keeps his wits through a debate group at his senior home, spending time with his fiancee and periodically driving his red convertible.
Joe Newman, who made a bid for Congress in Sarasota when he turned 100, runs a discussion group at his senior facility. Keeping up with current events keeps him going, he told WFLA.
It is my contention that mental exercise is just as important as physical exercise, the centenarian told WFLA. Just getting out of bed in the morning and figuring out something to do that is worth doing the next day and that is it.
He spends time with his fiance, Anita Sampson, 99. They have yet to set a wedding date.
We are waiting for my fiancées mothers permission, Newman told WFLA. Of course, we have had trouble getting an answer but we will wait.
He can also be seen behind the wheel of his red Mercedes convertible that he bought from his podiatrist.

Hope to be as close squared away a few decades hence.
Possibly the best sports car you can buy for under half a million, probably more
Was hoping for a manual but Ill compromise
She may be 99, but she has the body of a 92 year old.
That 8 speed DCT will do the job. It isn’t equal to Porsche’s PDK-DCT performance, but it sure isn’t bad for the money.
I had the 7 Speed Manual in my C-7.
“He spends time with his fiance, Anita Sampson, 99. They have yet to set a wedding date.”
No, seriously, good on this guy (and his fiance) for living life to the fullest. Most of us would be satisfied to live to 20 years less than this guy’s age, and don’t expect to be driving convertibles at that point.
Someone should get this guy’s blood and use it to isolate genes that have helped him live this long.
107 is the new 97.
Too funny. I recently bought a 2008 Mercedes Convertible with only 40,000 miles on it to ride around locally. Based on the age, it really wasn’t too expensive. My oldest son said to me, “Dad, you are 10 years into this mid-life crisis and still hitting new peaks.”
I’ve been in a mid-life crisis holding pattern for a good 25 years. Totally unrequited I might add.
Oh man, that face. What a character.
Extended-life turn signal indicators on that car. This is Florida after all!
:)
They are LED now. They last forever........................
Yep, he’s joking as a way to get around having a fiancee without a planned wedding.
Yes. He was being funny in his own way.
People like to say that as men get older they get a flashy car to recapture their youth. Not so, if that were true they'd be getting a '74 Ford Pinto with a leaky oil pan, a window that won't roll down, and a steel plate on the floor to cover the big hole where rust ate through the bottom of the car. That's the sort of car most young men drive until they get old enough to have money. Well, gearheads might make it a priority to have had a beat up Mustang or Road Runner or something that they fixed up but still not exactly not a new vette. In fact, not seeing a lot of 18 year olds driving brand new corvettes!
I like your grandmothers sense of humor. :)
I am pretty sure that my earliest world event memory is the fall of Saigon—but my memory is of my mother being broken up. I was five.
Wow...100....how wonderful.
I love her reply, to that obit.
She sounds like she was a fun person to spend time with....you were blessed (as you very well know :)
My earliest memories, outside of family, are the Kennedy-Nixon Debates on TV. That was the 1960 election, when Eisenhower was still POTUS. I was 5 then.
The reason I remember that is because we had a TV and people actually came to our house to watch the debate!..................................
