FRESNO, Calif. -- A California mother is outraged after she says her son, who has autism, was placed in handcuffs instead of being taken to the hospital.

I agree. I used to read Col. Jeff Cooper’s column every month.
That was one of his pet peeves. Cops shackling everyone around until they determine for certain that they are no threat.
I knew a WWII pilot who later flew just about everything in the Air Force including U-2s. He and his wife were driving when the cops pulled him over, cuffed them and made them lie on the ground.
They were both in their late 60s. Their car matched the description of one used in a robbery. They did not match the suspects, two young Blacks. They were furious and rightly so.
Absolutely, handcuffing and imprisonment in a vehicle is not an acceptable form of detainment.
Don’t know what not being clairvoyant at the appearance of bad behavior or over reaction by police has to do about recognizing the benefits of having a medical alert bracelet. Fortunately the young man had his mother and paper work showing his condition.
Did mom provide detailed instructions to the school on his condition, including symptoms, erratic behavior, etc.?
I had that happen to me also. And I was driving a tow truck with a vehicle loaded and customers in the cab. They had us all out on the ground handcuffed. We were the wrong truck...
“Hope you don’t mind? We were just doing our jobs...”
Re medical bracelet: “Why should he have to? Why should anyone have to?”
So that they could, if they wore it, get the particular kind of care they need, and so that EMTs and/or police will have a better chance of treating them properly and humanely.
I would think that someone with a recurring condition would WANT to wear a medical bracelet. It doesn’t have to be mandatory, so its reasonable to ask.
“Seizure is a medical issue. Police patrol officers should have enough intelligence to refer a medical issuesomeone seeking medical helpto paramedics.”
Was it an autistic or epileptic seizure .... maybe without some information they assumed it was a Meth seizure. Probably didn’t have a bracelet or other medical alert device to inform anyone. The objective is to try to have the person blend in but it has risks. Ask police about handling meth, PCP, etc. seizure people.
My hunch is finding good LEO material is difficult in Fresno, or anywhere else nearby in San Juaquin valley.
So do you have to be a sadistic idiot with questionable hearing skills before you apply or do they teach you that at the academy?
Asking for a friend...
There is a huge difference between wearing it for help, and needing to wear it to prevent from being imprisoned.
“Is an appropriate response to arrest him?”
When all you have is a hammer...
Of course.
But I think the posters who asked if he was wearing a bracelet were looking at it from the help aspect, rather than the mandatory aspect. That something might be a good idea both for the affected person and the responders doesn’t necessarily mean that it must be mandatory.
Maybe you interpreted those posts differently than I did, and thought they were on the side of mandating a bracelet?
Well, the patrolmen had the mother right there, she told them he was autistic and had seizures, she brought documentation of the condition to them from her car. She probably told the 911 dispatcher about his condition who probably passed this on to them so they could see if EMTs were needed.
Would you allow an exception where a subject interest refuses to comply with the officer's requests, or it was reasonably determined the subject posed a threat to himself or others?
Have a nice evening.
I wonder if the mom’s screaming was effective .... While this is not right, they do not have much time to assess and deal with situations.
Thank you, Does so - my sentiments exactly.
Not everyone has the option of wearing one.
bttt..
“principle to cops handcuffing people until they can sort things out”
Another thing I have seen is they make everyone sit on the ground, so they can tower over the ‘suspects’ and inflate the intimidation.
Police will do everything they can get away with to hurt people, from what I have seen with my own eyes.
“dont drink and post”
Sage advise...
lol
