The family of Kristin Smart, the California college student who vanished 23 years ago after attending a party near her school, was reportedly told by federal agents to be prepared for news and to secure a family spokesperson.
Denise Smart, the woman's mother, told the Stockton Record that she was contacted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and was told to "be ready."
"This is really going to be something you don't expect. We want to give you the support you need," she said she was told.
The report said the FBI was not clear on what the development was, she was told that her family might want to "get away for a while," and she should secure a family spokesperson.

Almost sounds like she's alive ...
Reads like Kristin was found alive.
Was she was living on Epstein’s island?
Geez... why the cryptic message? Just show and tell her. FBI trolling for news.
What BS!
It's almost cruel - the FBI ought to STFU until they have something to say.
I’m no fan of the FBI, but this story only made the news because a FAMILY MEMBER ran to the media.
It doesn’t appear that the FBI is the one who made the news public, but the mother.
See Post #7. I posted that reply to the wrong person.

I agree, what a bozo way of handling this - or anything -
“We have something really, really important to tell you about your daughter who disappeared 23 years ago” - someone will be in contact with you at some non-specific time.
The FBI version of “What what happens next”
I'm not sure what the FBI's rationale would be for dropping a cryptic hint like this to the family, but in fairness to them, it doesn't sound like the FBI trolled for news when it's the family that went to the media.
Reads like she was found alive and has told the FBI things that are completely at odds with the original reports of her disappearance.
“Watch what happens next” is what I meant.
What kind of POS FBI would tell the parents that? It’s almost like the old joke...”Listen up. Eveybody with a living mother take one step forward....Not so fast Smith. Where do you think you’re going??”
People are making a lot of assumptions about this.
Do you think it’s possible they want to be able to tell her in person? I’d like a heads-up in a case like this, than to just open the door and see an officer there. Nor would I like hearing it over the telephone.
Two officers coming to the door...
Every Military Mother’s worst nightmare
The FBI did not contact the news. Sounds to me as if they believe she is alive, but still need to confirm it perhaps. If she were dead they would have broken that bad news I would think.
They are probably waiting for DNA results to come back SOMEONE in custody already has confessed and told them where the body was!!!!
What a weird way to inform them of news about their missing daughter.
So are her parents Grandparents?
