Today’s Cryptogram

Posted on 01/18/2020 4:45:50 AM PST by nikos1121

Today’s TRICKY CG from The Arkansas Gazette. Everyone should get this under 6 minutes, and most under 4. Below 3 and it’s going to be your lucky day to play the lotto.

DERW OVXH CXEVFY LH RFY DERW OVXH REXRY SK LH RQX WVFN URWWXQH TSUGRQXY WS DERW OVXH DVWEVF LH. ---HSLQTX SCHTLQX

You can find this little fun word game, to combat early dementia and senility in us baby boomers, in several daily publications.

The way it works is a letter stands for another letter. For example: AXYDLBAAXR is LONGFELLOW (does not apply to today's cryptogram).

Beware, the game is very addictive. If this is your first time, don't be intimidated.

PLEASE DO NOT post the answer in general comments, but DO post your time and any tips you might give the group on how you solve these puzzles as puzzle solvers love to hear how you made out.

You can certainly send your solution to my private reply, or if you need a hint for today’s Cryptogram.

If you're just starting out on these, be patient, as you'll be proficient in no time.

If you need a little help you can copy the cryptogram and paste it to Hal’s Helper below:

You can then work on the puzzle without using pen and paper.

2019 Cryptogram Solvers Hall of Fame

Over the next few days I will list the names of Today’s CG puzzle solvers admitted to THE HALL OF FAME

The selection is based on the consistency of effort, fun, creative, sometimes goofy and lively commentary, and their general enthusiasm.

In addition their choice reflects their skill and temerity of purpose in the solving of these daily CGs and their support for this posting.

On February 26th, (The first day of Lent), I will name three Hall of Famers, and give a $25 donation to Free Republic in their behalf.

Congratulations to Today's Cryptogram Hall of Famer: Lonesome in Massachussets

Baby Boomer, Lonesome in Massachussets, born in 1950 like me, has been a CG solver for a long time. One of the most supportive followers who rarely gets stumped on a CG, and is good for some witty and creative posts. Congratulations!!!

Solution to our last puzzle:

I got this one almost instantly because of the author’s name. It’s one that you should recognize on-sight. Note that first name has all the letters in the last name, but one. He’s also a prolific author ;)

About 3 min. Guessed at 2 letter words and most used letter. This led to author’s first name. The journey to the solution was almost done.

4 mins.
First word opened the 18th word and then zig zagged through the CG.

The author was obvious on the first read-through, so I looked for other clues. Intuited the first word, which put me in good stead. Got half of the fourth word the first go-round. Not too tough.

Apparently this man would argue over authorship.

The key is the same as today’s cryptogram, with some additions for unused letters.

Can you shoot me a private message what the first letter of the first word is?

I had to give up on this one. Too hard for little old grandma from Pasadena! But still fun trying!

I have loved these word puzzles for as long as I can remember! Entering my 70s year next month! I used to race to the driveway to pick up the paper before my mom could. It always had a cryptogram in it. Whomever got the paper first got to work the puzzle! Fun Times.
