A California couple was arrested after police say they left out bikes to lure thieves and then recorded themselves beating them with bats which they posted to YouTube, police say.

-snip

Police say videos of the assaults were posted on YouTube. In the videos, police say the suspects appeared to plant a bicycle in the front yard of their home, unattended, and wait for someone passing by to stop and attempt to steal it.

When someone would try to make off with the bike, the suspects would rush from the house and assault the person with a baseball bat.

Community Service?

Joking aside, it's inducing the moral hazard and normally only applies to government.

With cops doing it, it's a perfectly "legal" sting operation. As Vice squads do on a daily basis.

Read the article. They routinely do this. And YouTube it.

This is entrapment.

When my kids were young there was a rash of bike thefts in our suburban neighborhood; we lost two in a month. I wanted to wet the ground in our yard and attach a live wire to a “bait” bike. Until Mrs. JimRed pointed out that, like the guy with the shotgun rigged to get the burglar breaking into his shed, I’d probably get some prison time. The law favors the criminals!

Major differences when cops do it versus private citizens. But I get the point.

This is entrapment.

I consider entrapment to be enticing someone to do what they would not normally do, not enticing a criminal to do what he normally would do.

Thieves are not victims.

Was what the couple did wrong? Maybe a little. Thieves are still not victims.

Play stupid games win stupid prizes applies to both here apparently.

This is entrapment.

This is thieves violating their property. We have a Right to Property don't we? We have a Right to protect our property don't we? We have a Right to defend ourselves and our property in the absence of law enforcement, don't we?

Don't be ridiculous.

I live in Georgia and it’s common when you no longer need something you leave it in the front of your yard for someone to pick up. I’ve seen clothes, furniture, and yes often bikes. It’s possible someone thought it was a giveaway. Certainly possible anyway so setting up a trap to viciously beat someone is wrong.

If they didn’t want their stuff stolen, then don’t leave it out in the front yard. Entrapment. And assault. These homeowners are idiots.

If they're idiots, they're only idiots for filming and posting it. Beating the snot out of someone who takes your stuff from anywhere on your property should not be considered assault. Anyone on the jury who disagrees with me is an idiot.

Maybe shoulda got a couple roadside freebie bikes, loaded the seats and grips with itching powder and loosened up the front axle nuts to barely snug, instead.

They routinely did this. On purpose.

Of course they did and they never got repeat offenders.......

They should have labeled their videos "Teachable Moments"...........LOL!
