(Excerpt) Read more at electoralmap.net ...
The 1972 electoral votes were still based on the population census of 1960. The 1970 census figures were first reflected in the 1976 election. In 1970 Pennsylvania was still slightly more populous than Texas but in 1976 had only one more electoral vote than Texas.
If Nixon had picked Volpe as his running mate, Gerald Ford would never have been President—Volpe would have succeeded when Nixon resigned. Whether he would have been able to win the 1976 election, who knows?
I couldn’t remember. I thought it was during the Reagan era.
And the funny thing is that among the men I knowfrom all over the state, most are fiscal conservative gun owners. I guess not enough.
“Trump will get 270 EV-290.”
Bwaaaaahahahahahaha..............................., that’s funny! Go to bed.
I thought I remembered that the incumbent party was given the Blue while the aspiring party the Red.
That was until 2004. In 2000 Gore had the Blue and Bush the Red. But after the big CF of that year the media decided to leave the designations the same for 2004 with the implication of Blue = friendly and Red = enemy just like on military maps.
Been like that ever since and the media attitude toward the two parties kinda bears that out.
Yuk! I prefer red. It looks like democrats kicked our ass on your chart.
So happy the only relatives I have there are step-types.
Not visited in decades, though I do like the area other than in winter.
Amazingly the GOP won my otherwise solidly Dem county (Hudson) in 1972 and 1984. It also gave 10% of the vote to George Wallace in 1968, not so surprising as their was a lot of anti black backlash by the white Dems back then.
I think Volpe would’ve had serious problems as an Establishment liberal (although Agnew himself had been one, but he moved rightward as Governor, especially due to the rioting and social breakdown in 1968 - but Volpe did not move to the right). Volpe almost certainly would’ve lost the 1976 primary to Reagan unless he was as politically nimble as Ford was in getting Rockefeller off the ticket in favor of Bob Dole (although Reagan erred greatly in picking liberal Republican Senator Dick Schweiker as his running mate).
If Volpe had been Nixon’s running mate and then became President, who’s to say he would have picked Rockefeller to be the new VP? As a northeastern liberal Republican he might have decided he needed a more centrist person from another part of the country, like Bob Dole or Gerald Ford.
No. Such a labeling then was deemed ludicrous, and still is. I remember in the ‘90s when left-wing RINOs were running in left-wing districts, they were called “Pink Elephants” as opposed to your normal “blue” Conservatives.
There might’ve been some media outlets prior to 2000 that came up with different schemes, but this was done in coordination on Election Night 2000 onwards.
Nonsense. Blue is the color of Conservatism. Red is Communist/Nazi totalitarian. Ever heard of Blue China ? How about the film “Blues” ? “Better blue than dead ?” Of course not. They’re REDS !
Volpe would’ve had the same problem Ford did when he was thrust into the Presidency. The Congress at that point would not have approved anyone not establishment/left-of-center as VP. He might’ve gotten Ford through, since Nixon was able to, but Dole definitely not. He was seen as too partisan and his going nuclear on his Dem opponent in 1972 did not endear him to the left.
Not saying it wasn’t.
Just explaining how it came to that point.
Did you notice the colors of the covers on the trade deals signed today? USA BLUE, CHINA RED.
GO BLUE!
Cheers, Otter
No, but thanks for pointing that out. ;-D
You noticed that too.
Blue used to be the color or the Republicans and red the Democrats.
The media made the switch (back in the 1990s?) and have been going back in time to "change history" ever since.
Well, to be fair, some of Mao Zedong’s henchmen WERE referred to as Blue Ants, and aside from that, the progenitor of Communists and Nazis, heck, totalitarianism itself, the French Revolutionaries (especially the Jacobins), primarily used blue for their uniforms, not red, so blue does actually and rather surprisingly fit in with the totalitarian left as well.
At least, this article as well as the book Emperor of the Blue Ants seems to use that term for Mao’s henchmen: https://web.archive.org/web/20050309031846/https://culturewars.com/CultureWars/Archives/Fidelity_archives/parricide.html
