Margo Kaplan is not very popular today. In the Monday edition of the New York Times, the Rutgers-Camden law professor, an NYU and Harvard graduate, takes to the op-ed pages to argue that we’ve got it all wrong when it comes to pedophilia. She writes that pedophiles don’t necessarily turn out to be child molesters and that pedophilia is not a choice, i.e. a pedophile might be born that way. We reached her in her office in Camden to discuss.

I’m shocked. I expected to get maybe 95% negative emails, but I’ve gotten so many positive ones. The online comments, though, are pretty uniformly negative, and a lot of people haven’t even read the article.

That is why you or I can have a child bride in any muslim nation. So, there are NATIONS of pedophiles and nations of abused and preyed upon little girls.

It’s sick to be sexually attracted to children, even if you don’t act on it.
And soon various medicial groups and pyschology groups will suggest that it is normal behavior and that it is actually healthy for children.
Having gone to Rutgers, my first thought was “Rutgers is going to embarrass itself again?”. Their professors are extremely liberal. I couldn’t find a link but read the interview. I agree though, it doesn’t seem like she is excusing the behavior in any way and advocates more information to try to recognize and treat it early on before an offense. From that excerpt, hard to argue especially if it can prevent children from being molested.
Exactly! Homosexuality may be genetic as is alcoholism, and other behaviors However, there is no right to exercise such “diseases” to the harm of others. It IS a CHOICE to continue to behave in such ways.
Don’t disagree, but do you look for a way to prevent it, or just have to wait until they act on it. I see the danger of normalization, but it doesn’t seem she is advocating that at all. And sadly, that effort (normalization) exists today anyway.
I don’t care whether the desire to engage in predatory behavior is natural for a few people. If predators act on that desire, decent people can and should act on the far more natural desire to protect the innocent.
Toldya. Sex with children has been the goal of the “sexual freedom” movement all along.
I agree that it’s sick, and it seems like she does as well. She’s just saying that it isn’t criminal unless you act on it, which is correct.
Its a meaningless distinction in terms of public policy. Obviously, the state can’t know (nor does the law punish) mere thoughts. She talks about the need for treatment, but who goes for treatment, and how does the state ostensibly offer treatment, for thoughts that have never been acted on?
Someone may be born a sociopath with murderous tendencies. That’s not a crime. Murder is a crime.

I don’t know-—the research I have come across is inconclusive. Showing most do not want help and the ones that do get help quickly drop out leaving little sympathy for their victims. Most still have the desire and those that drop out almost 40% go back to molesting children....they’re the ones that are caught——many continue without getting caught. There’s too much that’s inconclusive and she makes it appear that all they need is some help and they’re cured-—sadly, that’s not even close to what the truth is....
Who paid her and how much for this attempt at normalizing deviancy?

Define ‘children’.
I ask because the left often seems to define ‘children’ as being anyone 25 or younger when they talk about children and gun deaths.
But what’s a ‘child’ when we talk about physical attraction?
A good number of people on this site will have ancestors from the past two hundred years who were married as young as 13 and that was accepted as ‘normal’ up until World War Two.
So how do we define children and will we apply that definition consistently or just when it suits the particular narrative we’re discussing?
Figure out that issue first and then it will be easier to enforce laws against child molestation regardless of what agenda the leftists are pushing.
