The burial of the Amazon with a headdress made of precious metal dated back to the second half of the 4th century BC was found by the members of the Don expedition of IA RAS during the examination of the cemetery Devitsa V of Voronezh Oblast. This is the first ever found in Middle Don river, and well preserved ceremonial headdress of a rich Scythian women, earlier archaeologists found only fragments of such headdresses. Valerii Guliaev, the head of Don expedition, announced the first results of the examination on the 6th of December at the session of Academic Council of IA RAS...

The burial was robbed in ancient times. The robbers broke into the tomb from the north when the floor had already fallen and the sepulcher was buried i.e. in 100 or 200 years after the barrow was filled. However, only northern and eastern parts of the tomb had been robbed where there were the remains of the teenager and one of the young women.

Apart from the spread remains we found in the northern part of the pit more than 30 iron arrow heads, an iron hook in the shape of a bird, fragments of horse harness, iron hooks for hanging harness, iron knives, fragments of molded vessels, multiple animals' bones. In filling the robbers' passage the broken black lacquer lacythus with red figure palmette dated back to the second –third quarter of the 4th c BC was found.

Right. And keeping the warehouses filled with worthless stuff to ship around America is tough to keep filled.

This and other sites document women Scythian warriors, or at least armed women.

The site is also interesting in that women of very different ages were buried there but there are no signs they died a violent death.

It's so hard to separate reality from myth when it comes to Amazons.

Since the change of governments and the fall of the Iron Curtain there have been so many new archeological finds in Eastern Europe and Russia.

What a time it is for archeology what with the new lands opening up along with new technology like lidar and photographic interpretation from space.

I'd quibble -- it is easy to separate that myth from reality -- it's a myth that there were any Amazons. Someone I knew on another forum (I probably should get back over there, see how the forum is doing, it's been years) pointed out that the Greeks mistook skirt-clad horsemen in Anatolia for women.

One of the strange myths about Amazon warriors was that they had one breast removed so they could draw and shoot a bow unhindered.

So many myths have some roots in reality, I wonder if they find a Amazon mummified if it will prove or refute the myth.
