Eddie Murphy Admits 'Some of' His Old Jokes Are 'Cringey,' but Refuses to Say He Regrets Them

After almost 40 years in the spotlight, Eddie Murphy has seen how the times have changed in terms of lines comedians are willing to cross with their material.

But despite knowing how much of what he used to cover in how own stand-up routines 30-plus years ago wouldn’t fly today, he does admit there’s “some of” his material he’d still laugh at now — while other jokes are “cringey.”

“Some of it, I cringe when I watch it,” he said during an interview with Tracy Smith for CBS Sunday Morning this week, adding with a laugh, “Like, ‘Oh my God, I can’t believe I said that.’ ”

“In the moment, you kinda was like, ‘It is what it is,’ ” continued Murphy, 58, when Smith asked if people “picketing” his old material ever eats at him. “I’ve seen [old] stuff [recently] that I go like, ‘Oh, that’s … ooh.’ Yeah, you get a joke every now and then that’s cringey.”

“But that’s not to say I don’t appreciate it — I still appreciate it. And I’m looking at it within the context of the time, you know? I’m going, ‘Okay, I’m a kid saying that,’ ” said the actor and comedian, noting that he has no regrets “whatsoever” about his body of work.

Some of Murphy’s more controversial material is evident in his 1983 stand-up special Eddie Murphy: Delirious, where he joked about being “afraid of gay people” and about the AIDS epidemic.

Today, the star’s recent comeback (after starring over the years in films like Shrek and The Nutty Professor) has included a new Netflix biographical comedy, Dolemite Is My Name, and triumphant return to the Saturday Night Live stage, where he brought back several iconic characters from his initial run on the show in the 1980s.

Some of the best comedy is “cringey.” The Office ran for 8 years on that premise.

I’m Gumby Damnit! And I’m gonna smoke a cigar right here!

He was absolutely hilarious and there is nothing in his body of work to cringe about.

The PC crowd wants to act like victims or pretend your joke victimized another person/group.

Truth is they are trying to marginalize you so every victim group is superior and you have a smorgasbord of “tribes” arrayed at you...

SNL should go back to be being funny and more particularly drop 90% of the jokes about Trump every week.

It’s old and all they are doing are different versions of some other joke but, makes them a one note band led by some chick with one leg, named Eileen who’s only talent is being a waitress at IHOP....

That’s exactly what SNL and the producers of it and the current cast have forgotten. One sided harangues against those you personally dislike are not funny. A lot of the audience just stops watching when you do that.

He shouldn’t have turned down the role in Ghostbusters.

Exactly so. Anything and everything can be funny, if you do it right.

Eddie Murphy did/does.

About the movie, “National Lampoon’s Animal House”

According to John Landis, Universal Pictures President Ned Tanen objected so strongly to the Dexter Lake Club scene that he interrupted a screening of the film and ordered the scene be removed immediately, claiming it would cause race riots in the theaters.

In response, Landis screened the film for Richard Pryor, who then wrote a note to Tanen which read: “Ned, ‘Animal House’ is f**king funny, and white people are crazy. Richard.”

Richard Pryor was one of Eddie Murphy’s best friends.

I miss the humor of the 70’s and 80’s. Comedians were equal opportunity offenders of everyone.

Liberals have no ability to appreciate humor, I think because they are so filled with the. Comedy that pokes fun at people, all people, is good comedy and as someone said ; it brings down walls because we can all laugh at reality.

I call him Bitterman. He stopped being funny and I stopped watching after the 90s. He really seemed to be increasingly not just partisan but bitter. Kinda like Jim Carey. I actually liked both before their bitterness, hate and psychosis overwhelmed each of them.

I actually liked SNL before their bitterness, hate and psychosis overwhelmed them. Bitter hatred tends not to be funny so it doesn't help comedians or comedy shows.
