Reenactment of Washington’s crossing of Delaware completed

WASHINGTON CROSSING, Pa. (AP) ” Thousands turned out Wednesday to watch the annual reenactment of George Washington’s daring Christmas Day crossing of the Delaware River in 1776 ” the first time the crossing was completed in three years.

The event was scrapped because of bad weather the last two years, but historical interpreter Nancy O’Leary said at Washington Crossing Historical Park that the conditions this year ‘couldn’t be better.’

‘We had lovely weather, and we probably had record attendance,’ said Jennifer Martin, executive director of the Friends of Washington Crossing Park. She estimated that 4,500 to 5,000 people were watching the event, the highlight of a historical reenactment that draws people to the banks of the river in Washington Crossing, Pennsylvania, and Titusville, New Jersey.

Other activities include Washington’s address to his troops, historical speeches and processions, and staff in period clothing providing public interpretation.

Last year, high water conditions scuttled plans for the crossing in the wooden Durham boats. The year before, high winds prompted cancellation of the event.

In the original crossing, boats ferried 2,400 soldiers, 200 horses and 18 cannons across the river. Washington’s troops marched 8 miles (13 kilometers) downriver before battling Hessian mercenaries in the streets of Trenton. Thirty Hessians were killed, and two Continental soldiers froze to death on the march.

They are often full of subtle inaccuracies.

That is an understatement. As a Civil War re-enactor for 20 years attest to the bushels of “subtle inaccuracies” at re-enactments

We live twenty miles west of there. Wanted to go for years. Yesterday we and our daughters finally got there and it was great. Weather was perfect and event well done. Strong current forced boats to tack upstream and then across. Great day.

“The Crossing” is a fairly good account of that event.

“...George Washington has been subpoenaed to appear in Adam Schiff’s ...:

Washington would have had Schiff SHOT and then hanged by the neck from a tree for all to see.

But hey... it’s Christmas, after all... Maybe he’d just have run him through with a saber.

Thanks for posting, DoodleBob, and for the Philly ping, Albion Wilde!

Several posters here on FR have pointed out regularly how President Trump certainly has large brass ones, and, obviously, George Washington and his guys there did too.

Growing up in Philly, our family summer picnics were always up in the beautiful Washington Crossing Park (many years ago), and it is a great place to visit.   (For any who might be interested, here are a few more links you might want to check out related to that park, and another one with more photos of the crossing reenactment.)

You're welcome. I grew up outside of Philapa (as DeBella called it on the Zoo) and spent lots of time in Lower Bucks Co. It is gorgeous.

I have often noted that the Calhoun Street Bridge that links Trenton and Morrisville

is a great point of reference for liberty vs tyranny and gun control.

In short, why is there so much crime in Trenton where guns are basically prohibited...while, right across that Bridge, is a generally more affluent town with riches for the taking...

...but where you can obtain a carry permit AND firearm legally without a long wait? Hmmmm...now...how could this be...

"“The Crossing” is a fairly good account of that event."

Jeff Daniels played a very believable Washington (hard to believe, though).
Also, movie showed a side of Hamilton very few know about anymore.
