Theodore Roosevelt, Jr., was born OCTOBER 27, 1858.
As a child, he had debilitating asthma, often waking up at night as if being smothered to death.
At 6-years-old, he watched Abraham Lincoln's funeral procession from the window of his grandfather's mansion in Union Square, New York City.
Theodore was home-schooled as a child, becoming fascinated with animals and zoology after seeing a dead seal in a local market.
His father, Theodore Roosevelt, Sr., was a successful New York business leader, who helped raise support for the Union during the Civil War.
Young Theodore described him:
"My father, Theodore Roosevelt, was the best man I ever knew. He combined strength and courage with gentleness, tenderness, and great unselfishness. He would not tolerate in us children selfishness or cruelty, idleness, cowardice, or untruthfulness."
His father took the family on trips to Europe in 1869 and 1870, and Egypt in 1872, and helped found New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art.
At 15-years-old, Roosevelt wrote of their trip to Jerusalem:
"In the afternoon we went to the Wailing Place of the Jews."
After being accosted by older boys on a camping trip, Roosevelt began exercising.
He became an accomplished boxer and a third-degree brown belt in judo.
He entered Harvard in 1876.
He was devastated in 1878 upon news of the sudden death of his father, who had told him:
"Take care of your morals first, your health next, and finally your studies."
After graduation, he attended Columbia University Law School in New York.
While there, at the age of 23, he wrote a significant book, The Naval War of 1812 (published in 1882).
The book was so well received that just four years later, the U.S. Navy ordered a copy of

Don’t forget he instituted the patently unconstitutional National Park System and was a big player in the passage of the utterly destructive income tax.
Not impressed by Teddy Roosevelt.
I would love to see Teddy Roosevelt's image blasted off Mt. Rushmore, may he rot in Hell.
Teddy Roosevelt was America’s first “progressive” President. The great-grandfather of all the meddling, inefficient, destructive, big-spending, social-engineering, debt-inducing nanny-staters and deep-staters we have today.
Teddy Roosevelt is responsible for our entry into both World Wars, as well as every foreign entanglement since. He’s also the Godfather of today’s Environmental movement.
Anyone know the source of the decrepit political use of the word “progressive” as the basis of its current political application?
One of the Greatest Americans ever. Also one of the smartest.
I repectfully, but passionately disagree with you. America still is suffering from his legacy.
That any conservative could hold him in high esteem is completely amazing.
Throw in the Treaty of Portsmouth [NH] (the second one, in 1905).
Some have argued that it sowed the seeds of WWI, not to mention an expansionist Japan. (Korea was annexed shortly after that war.)
Of course, Czar Nicholas II & Co. pushed Japan into starting the Russo-Japanese war, thinking Japan wasn’t going to stand up to Russia grabbing an ice-free Pacific port...all but bankrupting both countries, causing social unrest for each of the two empires.
Any way, Roosevelt appeared to have sided with Russia, causing friction with Japan, and upsetting the British Empire’s Far East trade as well, now having to deal with Japanese trade competition.
But hey, Roosevelt got the Nobel Peace Prize.
Roosevelt’s legacy is rife with unintended consequences that are haunting us today. Yet I cannot help but think that today’s America could use more of Roosevelt’s masculine optimism and leadership.
bkmk
Roosevelt couldn't hold Lincoln's jock strap.
Lincoln was the initiator of Big Government and Federal Control over everything. Big Spending? How much did that war cost? How much land did he give away to the rail roads?
Social Engineering? Deep State corruption?
Lincoln beats Roosevelt by a mile. The only reason the Grant Administration is considered the most corrupt in US history is because Lincoln didn't survive much into his second term.
Lincoln massively expanded the corruption of Washington DC, and most of what is wrong with the nation traces back to his massively expanding Federal power.
Huh? You mean Woodrow Wilson I think. At least for the first one. Franklin Deleanor for the Second one.
Hes also the Godfather of todays Environmental movement.
Hardly. The modern movement tracks back to a bunch of communists in the 1950s.
It comes from the "progressive era", which I think followed the "Gilded Age." Roughly around 1900 to the 1930s or so.
"Progressives" was the term used back then to describe proponents of birth control, women's rights, and so forth. The term fell out of fashion and was replaced by "Liberal" around the 1950s or so, and when that term became synonymous with pretentious prick fascist bastards, they started calling themselves "Progressives" again.
Because of Roosevelt, we had interests in the Phillipines and other Pacific Islands. If we had stayed on our own continent, we probably wouldn't have given a flip what Japan did in the runup to WW II.
Short answer: Can't find his name right now, but in the mid-1800's, this guy through his writings challenged the superiority of limited, self-governance and posited that those who attained positions in government were of superior intellect than the ordinary person and a society "progressed" the more government controlled society.
Helpful insight into this decrepit political application of this word and the deceived minds that buy into it.
