This is an obvious scam.

They wouldn’t call him.

Scam.

What are they going to do, call every account they have about a server crash?

Is their nationwide computer monitoring nerve center at the McAffee Fort in the center of that volcano?

Also, McAfee already HAS his number from the billing info and they could refund without reaching out to him. Remember that.

I would be skeptical, too.

Try contacting McAfee via their Consumer Support:

That phone call is going around the net.

Perhaps, Gulag can look into it.... Maybe FakeBook.

“...a phone call from a McAfee rep...”
-
Nowadays, when you get a phone call,
you have no idea who may be on the other end of the line.

I am due a refund for some failure on my Microsoft. John Microsoft told me so but If I don't send IRS money immediately they will send the “Local Cops” out to arrest me.

It would be funny for someone with good writting skills to write a book on these scams.

Bold-faces scam.
NEVER give your credit card info to anyone.
Especially if they call you and CLAIM to be refunding money. They won’t, they will take the credit-card number and run with it, or sell it.

My son received an unsolicited phone call from a McAfee rep saying their server crashed and they need to refund my credit card.

After all the articles and reports about internet scams, you don't recognize this as a scam?

No large internet company is going to individually call every customer.

They run their entire operation on one server that crashed and they can’t recover it so you get some money if you cough up a few details. SCAM.

I get calls from the IRS and my telephone provider and numerous credit card providers and student debt relief organizations as well as (and this is once a month regular) my vehicle warranty has expired and they want to “help” me. Everyone one of them wants to help me. Scams all of them.

McAfee itself is one of the worst virus on the internet, and this is another example of its perniciousness.

Could be a scam.

But if you don’t give them your card number, how will you ever know?

Go on, try it!
