Wow...2 in 1 day: Rene Auberjonois & Caroll Spinney RIP
NY Times | 12/8/19

Posted on 12/08/2019 3:16:03 PM PST by hoagy62

Two famous actors passed away today. Rene Auberjonois was 79. He played a snooty staffer opposite Robert Guiiaume in the 80's series 'Benson'. He was slightly morer famous for playing the shape-shifting Founder 'Odo' on 'Star Trek: Deep Space Nine'.

The other was Carrol Spinney, who was 85. You probably don't know him by face, but you definitely knew him as his characters. He was the first and original 'Big Bird' and 'Oscar the Grouch' on 'Sesame Street' providing both the voices and puppetry for the characters. He only gave up being the characters not that long ago.

I liked Auberjonois in Mel Gibson’s “Patriot.”

I saw him last month in What We Left Behind: Looking Back at Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, a documentary about his Star Trek series. It was not a bad watch if you liked the original show. It gets tiresome if you didn't see DSN. Based on the title, I'm rating it "::" two colons.

My favorite line from Renee Auberjonois (from the Big Bus). “where is your god now, old woman?”

To me (80s baby), that means the guy who played Big Bird on Sesame Street for 50 years and the guy who voiced the French Chef and did the classic "Les Poissons" scene with Sebastian the Crab in The Little Mermaid.

Sucky day, part of my childhood died.

Just checked the IMDB and it looks like from the main cast of Benson, only Inga Swenson and Missy Gold are the only ones still around (along with Didi Conn and Ethan Phillips) as Robert Guillaume, James Noble, Caroline McWilliams, and now Rene Auberjonois have now passed.

Lewis J. Stadlen is still around. I guess he was replaced by Auberjonois in the second season.

Rene Auberjonois played an alien with heavy makeup that made him virtually unrecognizable on "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine".

Ethan Phillips played an alien with heavy makeup that made him virtually unrecognizable on "Star Trek: Voyager"

No, that would be Aron Eisenberg as Nog, who passed away just a few months ago at the age of only 50.
