The peak of the world's highest mountain and one of the most inhospitable places on Earth is not exactly the kind of spot where you'd expect to get stuck in a queue.

But that is exactly the situation that confronted around 200 climbers this May as they attempted to reach the summit of Everest - captured in a photo that went around the world.

Now, climbers who were caught amid the chaos which claimed 11 lives in just nine days, have spoken out about what happened.

They tell how bad weather and inexperience combined to produce tail-backs at the top of the world which proved fatal for many.

It's exactly the spot one should expect to wait in line. In fact, it's famous/notorious for that.

It’s funny how we’ve reached a point in modern civilization where climbing Everest is just a bucket list thing.

They should just build a nice lodge up there, with a really, REALLY long tram ride. :)

A lot of people actually still think that it is a barren place where some guy every year or two might try to climb it. I was one of those people until just a few years ago.

I understand the path to the top is littered with frozen human bodies buried in the snow.

Not a good place to be inexperienced at climbing. Not at all. What the hell were they thinking?

And a road to the top, so the lodge can sell bumper stickers that state "This car climbed Mt. Everest".

I think it would be great if climbers were required to do a bit of community service and pick up trash to be bagged. Then, send up balloons to let the wind carry the trash away from the mountain. If coordinated, drones could catch the floating trash bags for proper disposal. Teams could gradually get rid of the bodies, too.

I have enough danger and adventure just trying out a new Chinese buffet.

HAHAHA! Excellent!

‘Course, it would have to be pressurized.

Though we can not make light of just how inhospitable it really is up there, I think we really are headed in that direction. I think the only thing stopping it is the politics of the area it’s in. If it were in the US, there would already be a Trump tower there. Maybe not at the top, but at various way points on the way to the top. Solar and wind powered, of course. :)

Make it part of the acclimatization process as the climbers do that cycle of going part way up the mountain and then returning to a lower camp. A climber is only allowed to try for the summit after doing their community service.

The problem is that neither Nepal nor Tibet have any desire to limit the lucrative climbing permits that are issued for Everest. Anything that stands in the way of collecting fees will be opposed.

But what would stranded teams eat?

It’s sad and sobering, that there are numerous dead bodies up there, which are never retrieved.

How sad for their loved ones, that people die up there on this great adventure of climbing a mountain.

Don't forget the QuikTrip gas stations and the Burger Kings rest stops. The gas stations would only be on the right side of the road. You can coast down.

BS. No sympathy is to be wasted on loved ones. To attract sympathy, the loved ones should have prevented the frivolous endeavor

Not all are buried under the snow. Many are visible.

The closest environment to that of Mars is the top of Everest. Let’s see them put a settlement there at the top of the mountain and resupply it from low earth orbit.

Rescue climbers at a million bucks each as a side business.

At my age, it would be the LAST item in the bucket.
