The holiday season brings with it festive treats, sparkling lights, and The Radio City Rockettes. And, for many of these high-kicking dancers, running throughout the year ensures they can perfectly execute their routines multiple times a day all season long.
In preparation for the Radio City Christmas Spectacular, the women spend months rehearsing for six hours a day, six days a week. During the height of the Christmas season from the beginning of November through the beginning January, the 36 dancers are performing up to four 90-minute shows a day, as many as 17 per week. During this time, their workout routines involve warming up for shows or rehearsal on a treadmill, stretching, a bit of weight lifting, and a lot of dancing. But during the offseason, many of the Rockettes run to stay in shape.
I think of it as a relief, a way to go into a meditative state when youre running, said Natalie Reid, who is in her ninth season as a Rockette and one of 13 women employed full-time by the group. I can get up and get out and ease my mind and fuel my body. An added bonus: runningalong with swimming and bikinghelps strengthen her hamstringskey for executing those high kicks.
Shes even run races with other Rockettes. Last year, she ran the Berlin Marathon and the New York City Half. This year, Reid planned to do the New York City Triathlon, but it was canceled because of extreme heat, so she hopes to complete it next year.
Rockettes disciplined me to be able to train my body and helped me to train for the marathon, Reid said.

I get my kicks on Route 66.
Yeah, one of NYCs great spaces. The old Rainbow Room Lounge (before it was bought and ruined by some Italian family in the early 2000s), was another. Dark wood, Art Deco style and furniture. Pure class. Then some idiots gutted it, and put white tile and white leather furniture in there. It was tragic.
I wonder if they’re all wearing beautiful lingerie.
I think the Rockettes were originally inspired by dancers who appeared in the Zeigfield Follies.
The story goes that Florenz Ziegfeld paid for his girls to have beautiful underwear. (Even if nobody saw it, the girls themselves would know it was there...:-)
It’s a good thing those ladies aren’t skeleton skinny. They’d never make it through that schedule if they were. They’re athletes.
When will we get the first tranny Rockette? I figure it’s only a matter of time.
Man Pelvis isn’t capable of the same things that Woman Pelvis is...and I don’t think that you can surgically change that.
Yes, I had the occasion to tour the Rockefeller Brothers suite on the 56th floor when I was 17 years old, It was amazing... The RCA building will ALWAYS be the RCA building..
