Welcome to the Bicycle Thread. A monthly PING List for bicycle enthusiasts to share experiences, information and ideas.
A question for the thread:
I am looking for a good scenery DVD to watch while on my stationary bike. Something like going down a forest trail or a country road, a virtual ride.
But I have found nothing that was any good. Everything DVD I have bought so far has been a disappointment.
Youll be riding along a forest trail (very nice), and then all of the sudden the DVD cuts to a beach. Now youre riding along the beach. Then five minutes later it cuts to somewhere else.
This ruins the whole mood for me. Its like going through time warps. So if anyone knows of a nice, continuous cycling DVD, please let me know. Thanks.

As a climber, I particularly like the LONG mountain videos.
I saw a tent trailer that can towed behind a bike. I might buy it...
Any body know anything about these?
Took a week off the trainer. Guilty conscience here ...
Please add me to this list. Sounds right up my alley! Thanks!

Since we have a bike thread....
I have been looking (kind of) for a bike for use on roads and paths/trails. No rough mountain bike type trails, just unpaved relatively flat bike trails.
Somewhere in the 4 to 6 hundred dollar range.
About all I know is I want disk brakes (the caliper brakes I’ve had on other bikes always seem to become an issue for me). Is there a downsidce to disk that I’m not aware of yet?
I don’t think I need shock absorbers as I normally won’t be on too rough of trails (at least I don’t plan to at this point). What are the pro’s and con’s of shocks?
It seems that almost everyone has shimano derailers and gears. Most of what I’ve seen are in two different models (I seem to remember that both lines begin with an “A” but I don’t remember at the moment what they are)
What should I be looking for in the bike? Does anyone have a favorite brand (and why) or does the brand at this price point even matter?
Can anyone recommend a ‘buyers guide’ for starting this process?
Thanks
Look at used gravel bikes at a bike shop. Like a road bike but with bigger tires. Buying used will get you a much better bike that may only be a year old. Some guys trade in every year for the latest greatest.
I doubt you will find disc brakes at that price unless they have come down a lot. Rim brakes shouldnt be a problem unless you are really breaking hard along time anyway.
Look for shimano 105 or Ultegra components if you can find one with them.
JMO.
This would be a good choice for gravel roads and trails, but it’s a bit more than your stated budget.

I have an Ogre, which is similar, and it’s been great.
May your days be merry, and BRIGHT!
Caliper brakes (V-brake, cantilever) but otherwise good frames for a normal person

I have a Soma San Marco frame and love it to death
I should add I have a Sh(*)mano allergy. Every time I get a Sh(*)mnano part it malfunctions in under 500 miles. I also don’t like the feel of the Shimano shifters which is vague and indistinct.
My Sam Hillborn is fitted with old Suntour MTB parts that are 8 speed and the San Marco with Campagnolo Flat bar 10 speed parts. Neither are currently made.
The Sam Hillborn can take up to 45mm wide tires without fenders and the San Marco up to 38.
