The specifics of how the person contracted the plague have not been revealed
Three other people 250 miles (400km) away have been diagnosed this month
Two have the bubonic plague while two have the more lethal pneumonic strain
One man was treated for the bubonic plague after he ate a wild rabbit,
while the first two patients were diagnosed with the more fatal and contagious pneumonic strain.

The pneumonic strain can prove fatal in 24 to 72 hours
and is the 'most virulent form' of the disease according to the World Health Organisation (WHO).
It infects the lungs, making the disease airborne and much easier to transfer.
The bubonic form is less dangerous.
However, it is famous for causing the Black Death
which killed around a third of all European people in the Medieval era.

No doubt melting tundra is the source due to grrrrrrreta’s fave, CLIMAGEDDON!
Bring out your dead ping.
Both strains of plague now found in China.
Add to that the pork virus infection juvenile pork production,
the main source of protein production in China is at risk.

Just in time for the Black Plague Black Friday Sale.
4 out of what 1.3 billion? Not that worried. Plague never got wiped out, people like to believe it was, but it wasn’t. Plague zones are everywhere, including right here in America.
One will hop a plane to the US in 3, 2...
Thanks Tilted Irish Kilt. Obviously a legacy of the imperialist colonial era. /sarc For years China also had a large number of TB carriers, and didn't seem overly concerned about it.
4 people out of a billion for a curable disease (via antibiotics)
It happens in the American desert every year.
Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.
The purpose of the Bring Out Your Dead ping list (formerly the Ebola ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.
So far the false positive rate is 100%.
At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the Bring Out Your Dead threads will miss the beginning entirely.
*sigh* Such is life, and death...
If a quarantine saves just one child's life, it's worth it.
Never had the plague, but I think you are correct about antibiotics being used as a cure here in the USA and other civilized parts of the world. So there is hope for these people.
But wait...It’s all Trump’s fault for dissing global warming. /s
Pneumonic plague is the bad kind. It better stay in China.
I knew a man who got plague from rats. I don’t recall after more than 30 years which kind it was; he was rushed to the hospital and recuperated. There is a window during which drugs have to be administered. Pneumonic plague spreads rapidly and patients can die rapdicly. So if it did spread widely here, that would not be a simple thing to take care of. I wonder what drugs are used.
Okay, I looked it up. Some snips.

Medication Summary
Untreated plague can progress to a fulminant illness with a high risk of mortality. Thus, early and appropriate antibiotic treatment is essential.
Historically, streptomycin (15 mg/kg, up to 1 g intramuscularly every 12 h) has been the drug of choice. [27] However, in the United States, supplies of streptomycin are scarce [must log in/register to read more]

Diagnosis
If your doctor suspects plague, he or she may look for the Yersinia pestis bacteria in samples taken from your:
Buboes. If you have the swollen lymph nodes (buboes) typical of bubonic plague, your doctor may use a needle to take a fluid sample from them (aspiration).
Blood. You’ll generally have Yersinia pestis bacteria present in your bloodstream only if you have septicemic plague.
Lungs. To check for pneumonic plague, your doctor will take mucus (sputum) or fluid from your airways using a thin, flexible tube inserted through your nose or mouth and down your throat (endoscopy).
Treatment
Medications
As soon as your doctor suspects that you have plague, you’ll need to be admitted to a hospital. You’ll receive powerful antibiotics, such as:
Gentamicin
Doxycycline (Monodox, Vibramycin, others)
Ciprofloxacin (Cipro)
Levofloxacin
Moxifloxacin (Avelox)
Chloramphenicol
Preparing for your appointment
If you suspect you have plague, you’re likely to start by going to an emergency room. You may eventually need to see a doctor specializing in infectious disease.

4 reported.
2 issues might be in play here.
1. This is China. China doesn’t report anything that might be embarrassing to China.
2. This is in the rural area of China. Much of the rural area of China is isolated villages with little to no communication to the rest of the world. Entire villages could be wiped out by the airborne plague and it’d be a while before anyone found out.
The more likely issue at play is that the Daily Mail is bored and decided to report something, ANYTHING. America averages 7 plague cases a year. Plague happens, it’s just not that big a deal anymore.

Dang it!
I’m behind on my panic monger quota.
You are not helping.
THANK YOU for enlightening us. I think some of this hoopla is due to the liberals and elites yelling fire to distract us.
Yes. I believe the plague is still with us, particularly in the desert regions of the Southwest. But rejoice, there is a cure available if certain procedures are taken.
Follow the money trail and who would profit from such disinformation. In the meantime, wifey reminds me to wash my hands and bathe more often to prevent the spread of contagious diseases.
That is all for now, got to get down to WalMart for the Black Friday sales and pick up a few things...
Bubonic plague is much less infective than pneumonic. When the plague turned pnuemonic, that’s when so many died in Europe.
It has never gained a foothold in the US. Hopefully it won’t.
