Sad news today from the Satellite Of Love, as Mystery Science Theater 3000 has been canceled for the third time, this time by Netflix. The news came down today after several members of the cast revealed they had received word they would not be coming back for a third season on the streaming platform. The show had found a renewed audience after they Kickstarted themselves back to life with enough money to make a dozen episodes, with Netflix as their home to stream the content to the masses. No reason has been given by Netflix, as of the time of this article being written, to why they didnt renew the show.
Its not the first time the show has gone through this as the original run was canceled by Comedy Central in 1996, then was picked up by the Sci-Fi Network for three years before being canceled again in 1999. After the MST3Ks record-setting Kickstarter to fund new episodes took place in 2015, they were picked up by Netflix for distribution while still working with Shout! Factory for home releases of old and new material. Netflix funded Season 12, but only enough to make a six-episode season, referred to as The Gauntlet. While the news is sad, Joel Hodgson and others were quick to point out that while this is the end of their run on Netflix, it is not the end of MST3K.
Indeed, Mystery Science Theater 3000 is not going off into the cold, lonely, Manos-controlled night. The minds behind the show are still doing a nation-wide tour, launched their own Twitch channel with 24/7 content, and have their annual Turkey Day Marathon coming up this Thursday. Hopefully, Joel and everyone else can shed some light on what they have planned next. Meanwhile, Netflix is already getting grief on social media from fans. With criticism ranging from them raising their rates while only delivering half a season of MST3K episodes, all the way to accusing the platform of not knowing what to do with the show.
Turkey day marathon is tomorrow.
bttt!
Yes...Netflix...IT STINKS!
It’s never been the same since they replaced Joel anyway.
I think you can still get it for free on Pluto.TV, a free streaming network with tons of channels (and commercials) for your viewing pleasure. /sarc
It’s all over youtube but still love the turkey day marathon. Joel is there live with the crew.
I hadn’t realized they’d even re-started. Have they ever done Plan 9 from Outer Space?
Mike was good, too.
I like them both.
They were watching a zombie movie, and the climax of the movie was in the cemetary where the zombies came from. The bad guy was running through the cemetary when the undead came up from their graves, tripped him up, and dragged him down to be eaten.
Tom servo said, "You know, this cemetary isn't very effective."
A fan of Pluto tv. Their “Midsummer Murders” channel. Do believe we’ve seen every one made. English town, chief inspector (married and an actress, daughter), and a gaggle of murders.
Pluto’s movie library has a lot to offer as well. One need no longer wonder why the channel “X-TV” was taken from the Roku line up. TPTB replaced the app with Pluto.
BTW Roku Channel has Jack Nicholson/Helen Hunt in “As Good As It Gets” in their schedule this month.
Maybe, but Mike was the head writer during the Joel era. And Mike wasn't so bad either...
MST3 is the the TV show that introduced me to worst movie ever made (’Manos’) - and warned us that it would be laughably terrible. It really was. I laughed my head off at the wooden ‘acting’, the ridiculous script and, well, everything.
So, this is a blow to MST3 fans everywhere - but not a fatal one.
Both the show and it’s many fans are resilient.
I’m confident MST3 will reemerge on another platform in the near future.
YouTube has many episodes. Check out Rifftrax too.
You can watch MST3000 for free on Pluto 24 hours a day.
For Heavens sake, cancel Netflix. They are evil. Very evil.
I wonder if it has something to do with cancel culture. There is no movie made in the 20th century that would pass muster today with the snowflakes.
Probably the best show in the history of television.
Not since the US renounced the use of torture ...
