Tim Berners-Lee, a British engineer credited with having invented the World Wide Web in 1989, has released an ambitious plan detailing steps for better online governance, addressing problems like misinformation, data surveillance and censorship.

The Contract for the Web was created by Berners-Lee’s World Wide Web Foundation in cooperation with representatives from governments, companies and civil society to “keep knowledge freely available,” while strengthening laws, regulations and companies “to ensure pursuit of profit is not at the expense of human rights and democracy.”

The plan is backed by more than 150 organizations, including internet giants like Google, Microsoft and Facebook, along with interest groups like Reporters Without Borders.

The governments of Germany and France have also indicated their support for the plan. […]

The WWW Foundation criticizes current laws and institutions that it says fall short of protecting citizens and preventing the abuse of the technology in society, business and politics. …

I can only assume he’s working with Al Gore on this.

Man who DIDN'T invent the Internet/WorldWideWeb? I think I'm going to add that to my resume since everyone else seems to get away with it.

No one he names in support, is in favor of free speech or a free press.

Smells like Fascism.

Big Government joining with Big Business to enforce tyranny on the People while telling the people that utopia is coming.

I want smaller government. I want less government protection of media companies. If they slander and libel it should cost them.

Google, Microsoft and Facebook, ... Reporters Without Borders ... the governments of Germany and France

Soon to be joined by the CCP. Yeah, that'll save the internet.

Darpa and Arpa created the internet back in 68-69.
The WWW was created as a graphical interface to what was a very difficult system to use.

I remember the day in I think ‘93 when I saw the first web browser.
We were shocked at Intel and suddenly 3/4 the building was exploring the possibilities.

Given that Googld FB et al are backing it, it has to be a slicker more efficient way to filter out all non PC information and from the entire Web rather than from only FB and Google etc. Perhaps it will be in conjunctio with the big banks to institute a Social Credit Score with real teeth. Get the Banks working on it and the whole economy can be brought into line.

What's next, a plan to save the banking system backed by Chase, Bank of America and Citibank? How about a plan to solve the partisan political problems, authored by Nancy Pelosi and Mitch McConnell?

“I will stand up for the preservation of the free internet that we have grown to know and love in recent decades,” German Economy Minister Peter Altmaier said...

Here’s the problem in a nutshell. When we hear “free internet”, the left and right hear two different things.

The Right: “Free internet” = freedom of speech, freedom from censorship and freedom from lynch mobs coming after you for your thoughts and speech.

The Left: “Free internet” = free porn

For the Left, “free” also means at no cost, which means the government runs and controls the whole thing using your tax dollars. So, you know, it’s free.

He didn’t claim to “invent the internet”.

It says he is credited with inventing the World Wide Web, which he did by demonstrating the first successful communication between a Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) client and server via the internet in Nov. 1989.

Reading comprehension.

re: “Web inventor Tim Berners-Lee”

Did he work at work at (the early) Cisco? Or Sun Microsystems?

Did he work at DARPA?

re: “The WWW was created as a graphical interface to what was a very difficult system to use.”

What was the name of that text based ‘crawler’ that could follow simple links back then (I think it was)?

The ‘browser’ at that point became a link/a combination of a text-based document viewer/reader and images (gifs etc.) then ....

Tim Berners-Lee invented HTML which is what all web pages, including this one, are encoded in. So he in fact did invent the World Wide Web, which is not the same as the Internet.

Here’s what I was thinking of:

From: “Precursors”
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_web_browser#Precursors

From 1987 ... TransText

Another early browser, Silversmith ...1987 ...

Starting in 1988, Peter Scott and Earle Fogel expanded the earlier HyperRez concept in creating Hytelnet which added jumps to telnet sites ... and which by 1990 offered users instant logon and access to the online catalogs of over 5000 libraries around the world. ...
