This is not unexpected, since many of these have newer versions or functional replacements.

I'm still upset that they're ending support for Windows 7. My laptop runs like a dream with it and is too “antiquated” to run with 10.I tried it...complete failure...had to reformat.

Depends on the version you’re speaking of.

1903 caused problems for many, many people, including me.

It broke printing functionality across a wide swathe of users and printers and drivers, forcing everyone to scramble to update printer software.

In my case it also broke basic things like Visual Runtimes which in turn caused problems with all manner of software that rely on the runtimes. And, curiously, Outlook mail messages refused to send because the client and server would not shake hands on the security front (web client and Thunderbird tests were OK) regardless of port/SSL settings.

Rolling back (which, fortunately, was available) eliminated these problems. One problem that remains, however, is Microsoft/Windows’ dogged insistence on checking/downloading updates and having the cheek to only allow the user to pause such updates for a small amount of time. Third party utilities overcome this but like so many Microsoft is causing problems for the end-users for Microsoft’s benefit ie they’re trying to minimize their support costs.

Frankly, I’m sick of the monkey see-monkey do GUI sameness. Everything’s flat now. But we have powerful video chips and cards and powerful high res displays. So why are we going flat? Why are all providers and platforms going flat at the same time?

Only issue I had was unexpected. Seems that McAfee anti-virus which is routinely installed on computers can interfere with Win10 if you don’t keep your subscription. I ignored it then one day it screwed up my computer OS. Had zero idea it could happen, no idea it was the cause. Microsoft had to go in, do an uninstall of it, get rid of all the bad temp files it created. I asked the tech about it, he said it happens fairly regularly. If you aren’t using McAfee, get it off the computer.

I've had good luck with it so far, but I intentionally don't push my Win10 systems very hard, so I'm not the best test case.

I have a Win10 tablet. When I tried to upgrade from 1803 to 1903, it was nightmarish. The upgrade would reboot soon after the log-in screen. I used Macrium Reflect to restore the 1803 image.

That went on for a couple of weeks. I finally figured out what the problem was: Soon after I bought the tablet, I installed a 3rd-party utility. The creator apparently no longer supports the utility, so it was out-of-date and and incompatible with the later .NET. After I removed the program from the disk and start-up list, Win10 worked ok.

For some reason, it still will reboot periodically. Sometimes, it powers down completely and I have to hold the power-on button down-to-power-off to get a fresh reboot.

I am not sure whether the problem is inherent with tablets or with Win10. I have a bit older android tablet which also occasionally powers down or reboots on its own.

I dread the day my Win7 laptop and/or desktop die from old age. I do have a Linux Mint 18 laptop, but it has its own peculiarities.

So far, I only use the Win10 tablet for streaming radio and occasional streaming video (sporting events, etc.). I don't fully trust it with real stuff.

I had few problems with WIN7 but when I was downgraded to WIN10 in the middle of the night, things started to go wrong in short order. Mostly it would hang up and get slower and slower. I’d clear the cache an do the usual tricks but to no good. Virus scans showed nothing. It became unusable. I switched to Linux and it is fast and stays fast. No degradation.

I agree with that. At least with the 3D buttons and windows, one could actually see where it begins and ends. I find those 'flat' interfaces make windows run together.

I also hate that MS quit using 'blue' to identify clickable text. Why did they make such a change? To give programmers something to do?

So far, Linux Mint and some 3rd party Windows programs still retain the 'classic' look and fee.

The last update (2-3 weeks ago) blew up my trusty Photosmart 2610 printer and also failed to load.

Windy Holes Updates are now OFF.

It appears to shut down successfully. On the next start up, it is trying to open tasks that were closed before shut down.

Sometimes, on shutdown, it claims that a Task Host window is open and preventing shutdown. Not true, but can’t shut down without choosing Force Shutdown. What did MS do? go back and copy some code from Windows 98, which had problems shutting down too?

I’m hoping that MS doesn’t lend its programming team to the next Mars shot, or it will crash for sure.

Apple does that with its OSs as well. Buy a new machine after a certain period or risk security features and apps that no longer function as they once did. Suks.

Unlike many Freepers I'm not a tech head or “geek”.I do Excel,Word,e-mails,youtube and FR.I downloaded 10 on my really good Toshiba laptop back when it was free. Bad news from the start...although Toshiba *did* say that my model wasn't compatible. It then sat idle for a long time until I found the restore discs (which were lost) and voila!...back to W7 and great functioning.

Yeah, I've seen that too. Very annoying, and deeply troubling behavior.

Microsoft is the only company that can sell ‘upgrades’ with less features.

With the Windows 7 end-of-support clock slowly winding down to January 14, 2020, Microsoft is announcing it will offer, for a fee, continuing security updates for the product through January 2023.
