When a Canadian Explained to Me the Horrors of Socialized Medicine
American Thinker ^ | 31 Oct, 2019 | Bonnie Cohen and Howard Sachs

I was in line at Costco — that wonderful example of American liberty, capitalism, the profit motive, and what it brings us — namely, a bounty of wonderful goods and services we freely choose, all at low cost and high quality. Costco is an example of what's right in America. So why not pass the time and strike up a conversation with the fellow customer in front of me?

I heard from her accent she was from Canada. I asked her about socialized medicine. I said to her that all the men and women of the American Left (the Democratic Party) tell us to look to Canada, to a big powerful government as a model of what we should seek to run our own health care here in America.

(snip)

It's ugly and scary."

She elaborated. She told me the tragic story of her sister, who had worked as a nurse in a hospital. She experienced some serious symptoms that needed further tests. She was put in a long queue to have an MRI. Her sister worked as a nurse. She could have pulled strings to get ahead of others waiting in the long line. She chose not to take advantage. Finally, seven months later, the scan was performed. The test revealed a cancer that was no longer treatable. My Costco line-mate said, "This happens all the time in our state-run Canadian system. You in America, you don't hear about these things, do you?"

Most Canadians I’ve spoken with are honest enough to admit that it’s not “free”. They pay a substantial amount of taxes for it.

Those who are connected to those in charge get the short queue. The rest of us get cemetery plots.

I am not in favor of Medicare for all. However, I have traveled to Canada (Niagara/Niagara on the Lake)almost every year for the last 4 years.

When I am there, I will ask bartenders, waitresses/waiters, Cashiers, guests at B&Bs "How do you like your healthcare"? Almost without exception, they are love it.

One shop owner said that if they ever did away with their healthcare there would be a revolution.

Those over 65 do not have to pay for any drugs.

Although I am not in favor of universal coverage, I have yet to hear one complaint about their healthcare.

are most of the people you are talking to Quebecers?

Quebecers are more euro than new world.

I also understand that they suck more wealth from the other provinces than they contribute.

I recently treated a Canadian student studying here in the US.

I ordered an MRI and told him that he should have the study in the next two or three days and I’ll have the report back in about 5 days.

He was blown away. He told me in Canada it takes months to get an MRI.

Parts of ther health system is better than ours.
Much of their health system is very bad compared to ours.

I am for improving our syatem, but not by making it overall worse.

...

Then I would ask them to what extent they used it.

My Brother-in-law was an Oncologist here in the metro-Detroit area and he's treated many Canadians who couldn't wait in the long Canadian lines.

There was an elderly Canadian couple who were best friends of my parents. Elaine had developed a tumor behind one of her eyes and was put on an 8 month waiting list before it could be taken care of so she came to Detroit to see my BIL. He was able to get her into surgery the following week where they successfully removed the tumor.

Had she waited the 8 months, it was 100% certain she would have lost the eye.

One only has to do a search on MRI facilities here in S.E. Michigan and compare the results to Ontario. There are a number of them within a 10 mile radius of me and I can get in to see one within a week. Not so in Ontario.......

When the government is in charge of who gets treated, the government makes sure that the ones treated are the ones who vote for them, and give campaign contributions.

Aids treatment, abortion, euthanasia and sex-change procedures would be privileged, while cancer treatment for an old White lady would be held back.

That is exactly what obama (hillary) care was designed to do. Fortunately it was slowed way down before it could get there.

Actually in my experience Quebecers are strangely less onboard with it than English-speaking Canadians.

The Canadian Supreme Court case which overturned the ban on private clinics was filed by a Quebecois doctor who was also a lawyer.

".... They pay a substantial amount of taxes for it...."

Reminds me of a travel program we were watching at a relative's home many Thanksgivings ago.

Oprah was in one of the nordic countries (Denmark, Norway, Sweden--I can't remember which) doing a travelogue to show how socialism worked so well for them.

She was in a local's home interviewing them and having them show the TV audience their home.

The home was nice but very sparse of "things" and "stuff" most people in America have in their homes. Knick-knacks, pictures on the walls, collectables, etc. things that make a house a home. Oprah was going on and on about the people in this country got everything for free basically and lived comfortably.

But she was bothered by the lack of anything in the home but the sparse, bare necessities. She asked the woman if that was the custom in the country or was that just her choosing not to have "things".

The woman spoke up and replied that their taxes were so high that they had no money to buy anything but the bare essentials.

It took Oprah all of 2 seconds to end the interview and clear out of the home.

Why? Because it went against her premise that these people lived grand lifestyles with the government paying for free this and free that.

Basically, the woman told her they were taxed so much that they were poor.

I think we should have community clinics that anybody can go to paid for by lottery sales so the poor pay for it. Meanwhile, there can be private clinics paid for by cash for normal maintenance things or private insurance for big things. The public clinics can be staffed by volunteers, or as part of community service by doctors and nurses who got DUIs. Perhaps a few male ob-gyn doctors from the middle east to ensure diversity
