Deep-sea explorers scouring the world's oceans for sunken World War II ships are investigating what they believe could be the third ship of seven lost to the Pacific during the Battle of Midway.
Hundreds of miles off Midway Atoll, nearly halfway between the United States and Japan, a research vessel is launching underwater robots miles into the abyss to look for warships from the famed Battle of Midway.
Weeks of grid searches around the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands have already led the crew of the Petrel to one sunken warship, the Japanese ship the Kaga.
This week, the crew is deploying equipment to investigate what could be another.
Historians consider the Battle of Midway an essential victory for the U.S. and a key turning point in WWII.
Frank Thompson, a historian with the Naval History and Heritage Command in Washington, D.C., who is onboard the Petrel said: 'We read about the battles, we know what happened. But when you see these wrecks on the bottom of the ocean and everything, you kind of get a feel for what the real price is for war.

“Shattered Sword” contains a sketch of the Kaga after it was bombed. From the island almost all the way back to the stern, everything above the hull was just gone.
You are correct. McClusky’s bombers were following the Arashi which was returning to Nagumo’s force after attacking the Nautilus which had unsuccessfully attacked the battleship Kirishima. The sub pretty much achieved nothing by itself, but made a major contribution to the battle just by being where it was and doing what it did. The fortunes of war.
Exactly. Most of the flight deck on the actual wreck is just gone.
If you’re referring to the image on the monitor in the linked story, that’s an old photo of the Kaga, not the wreck itself. There’s pretty much no flight deck left on the wreck.
His dialogue was actually dubbed in. Paul Frees was the voice of Yamamoto.

I thought he spoke some English.
I think he did, the director decided to go with dubbed in dialogue. According to his Wiki bio, Mifune played Yamamoto in three different films.
The Japanese did a film on Yamamoto, which I thought we fair to his memory, history and equally fair to the US.
