It's only $4.99. But Costco's rotisserie chicken comes at a huge price
CNN ^ | Oct 112019 | Nathaniel Meyersohn

At the back of Costco's stores, past the televisions, jewelry, jumbo-sized ketchup jugs and tubs of mixed nuts, is one of the retailer's most prized items: The rotisserie chicken that costs just $4.99.

Cheap Kirkland Signature rotisserie chickens aren't only a quick way for families to get dinner on the table. For Costco, the chickens are a lure, pulling customers into stores and getting them to browse the aisles, adding sometimes hundreds of dollars worth of items to their shopping carts before they pick up that bird. The chickens have become almost a cult item. 91 million were sold last year, double the number from a decade earlier. They have their own Facebook page with nearly 13,000 followers. So Costco is willing to go to extreme lengths to keep its chickens at $4.99. For the past few years, it's been recruiting farmers for this moment: The official opening of a sprawling, $450 million poultry complex of its very own in Nebraska.

Chickens have secured themselves immunity from extinction as a species as long as mankind is around simply due to their value as a high quality food source.

The Walmart chicken is already too big for 2 senior adults. And I am not a big fan of leftovers. But my dog does not mind the leftover chicken.

It depends on location and the grade of gas. I just now looked on gas buddy to check the price of premium fuel. Costco was $.25 cheaper than the nearest competitor, and about $.40 cheaper than most of the others.

Do you think the price will go down when China starts buying corn and soybeans for real and the subsidies are naturally phased out?

Keep dreaming, once the farmer begins to enjoy more of the real value of his production people like you will complain they make to much money for the work and investment.

I agree. Lot of sound and fury but not many facts in this article

I am certain you are right, but for 2 senior adults, WM chix is already too big, and none of us are big fans of leftover chicken. I end up boiling the carcass in water and it makes decent chicken broth for future cooking.

“Cost of Costco membership two adults is not practical considering the quantities you have to by. “

My BIL just bought a Samsung QLED TV. Just his points paid for his membership plus it had a factory 5-year guarantee and a 15% rebate via Costco card.

We are just two adults and we save the fee several times over. Gas alone pays for most of the fee and we are both low-mileage drivers.

I have traveled on 4 continents, and food is cheaper here in good ole USA than all civilized countries I have visited. And so long as Obesity is a huge problem, I have to laugh at “high food prices” here.

“The gasoline discount is generally only about a nickel and sometimes less compared to non top tier stations here.”

I gassed up last weekend. It was 12 cents plus points.

Wow, I’ve been immune to Costco’s sinister plot and didn’t even know how lucky I was. I was always like who the hell are these weirdos eating food at Costco?! I swear I didn’t even know they sold cooked chicken. I just buy it and cook it at home like an idiot I guess.

I understand. One half of those COSTCO chickens lasts an easy three-four meals, but Dayum, they are good each time.

A sidebar on this is that they have a big sign that says "Rotisserie Chicken". I get some strange looks when I ask the wife if she wants a "Rot Chicken".

Costco’s too far away from us to use even if the membership was free. The Sams is about 25 miles away but we have found that a Sam’s Plus Membership is cost-effective.

While we only buy a small number of things at Sam’s, most of them do not justify the membership fee. However with the plus membership for $100 I get my heart meds for about $300 less per year than anywhere else. So for us it pays off quite well. Also with a Sam’s Plus Membership we get free shipping on almost anything we want to order. Very convenient. And they must be taking a hit on it. Which is their problem in my opinion.

Good for you if you are actually saving with Costco membership. We did not. For one thing the store was too far, and being light eaters, the sizes of food items in Costco was too big for us.

Speaking of gadgets like TV & Laptops & kitchen gadgets, they seem to last for ever these days. Walmart, eBay are places to snap up bargains for those.

Same with Jewel in Chicago area. You get a much smaller bird for about 4 dollars more. Total rip.

Buy the Costco gift cards and you don’t have to purchase a membership.

In 3 years here in Florida, I have put on 10,000 miles on my new car. And it gives 35 mpg in city and 40+ on road. It takes less than $15 to fill up and it lasts 2 weeks, so cost of gas is not a big consideration for us.

But if you are saving on gas using Costco, more power to you. For us it would be 35 miles drive to nearest Costco.
