Theres no way I can write about the return of Flight Simulator without sharing just a little bit of my own story for context,...
...
Like many of its predecessors, the new simulator models the entire planet, including something like 40,000 airports worldwide. I used to brag in presentations about FSX that we started with 2 terabytes of scenery data, and then compressed that to fit onto a couple of DVDs in a box. The world in the new version consists of 2 petabytes of data yes, thats one thousand times bigger. The scenery is built on Bing satellite and aerial imagery, augmented with cool buzzwordy stuff like photogrammetric 3D modeling and multiple other data sources, all of which is streamed via Microsofts Azure cloud service. Yes, the word streaming means youll need an internet connection, but you can download and pre-cache scenery areas for offline use, or even fly in a fully offline mode.
All of this data results in an environment that is often breathtakingly lifelike, and it means that the entire planet is effectively what we used to call a high detail area, only more realistic. For the tech-savvy, many of the scenery areas boast a resolution of 3 centimeters per pixel, while the default in FSX was about 1 meter per pixel. Throw in 1.5 trillion trees, individual blades of grass modeled in 3D, and a complete overhaul of lighting and shadows, and the result is an unprecedented level of detail for a flight simulator of any kind. True VFR flight, day or night, with real-world landmarks is now possible everywhere on the planet.

Time to upgrade my machine..lol
then there’s no need for me to spend $$$ at flight schools then?
I wonder how many copies or downloads will be sold to madrasses/mosques.
Especially if you don’t need to worry about landings.

= = =
Will the madrasses/mosques be blurred out?
Will Govt/Military locations be blurred out?
or some rag terrorist trying to get thru the cockpit door..
how do i get into this technology?
You can literally learn to fly through simulators these days.
I believe the 9/11 attackers got most of their training through flight simulators and that was many versions ago.
You can download current navigational data from Navigraph.com in FSX. This contains updated navaid frequencies and approach chart info. Using that in conjunction with high fidelity simulation software such as what PMDG offers will give you a taste of real world flight.
VATSim is a group of ATC afficionados that virtually control the skies. Flying with a headset and interacting with those folks will save a pilot a lot of money when training for an instrument rating.
The new FS looks fantastic. I’m a fan of software like this that inspires people to pursue aviation. Can’t wait until it comes out!
Just upgraded mine to an i9 9900K and an MSI Z390 ‘Godlike’ board with 32GB of RAM. My GTX 1080 plugged right in. Framerates are unbelievable. Hoping it’ll last for the next 5 years.
“You can download current navigational data from Navigraph.com in FSX.”
Yes.
That’s one of the tools we used on 4Chan years ago when we found that idiot Shia Labeouf’s stupid flag..
Ping for future reference
I wouldn’t mind “flying” over Area 51 and S-4 at 3 cm resolution...
I know they haven’t announced pricing yet, but just to get an idea of the kind of money we’re talking about here... Do you have any idea what it would cost to get mid-range priced equipment (yoke, rudder pedals, headset, etc) to get involved with this?
Flight sim bump
Is it Win-XP compatible?
Wouldn't it be cool if MS programmed in people trying to shoot you down over those areas?
— Is it Win-XP compatible?
I would not bet on it.
